Though they were both expected to follow a particular path, they had more choices than a female would. Both of them could go out on their own without a companion to look after them. They could come and go from their family's home without anyone saying a word. They had family money available to them and weren't cut off. If Abigail's family had not supported her, she could have been cut off from everyone without a penny.
To me, Cory seemed more lazy than anything. Luther instead was clearly more gifted in a different way than the one his parents wanted for him. If Abigail hadn't died I don't think they would have been as understanding. Of course him being a man meant that he could always go out on his own.
The differences between that available for men versus women were heartbreaking. But, both of these men were still miserable because everyone was expected to follow predestined paths. Such an awful proposition that led to more idle hands than productivity. Look at what got accomplished following WWII when women entered the workforce!
But, I do believe Cory was pure lazy.
