The August 2019 Themed Pick is Forty Thousand in Gehenna by C.J. Cherryh. The theme is Struggling Colony. Please use this thread to post questions, comments, and reviews, at any time.

Official description:
When forty thousand human colonists are abandoned on a planet called Gehenna for political reasons, and re-supply ships fail to arrive, collapse seems imminent. Yet over the next two centuries, the descendants of the original colonists survive despite all odds by entering a partnership with the planet's native intelligence, the lizardlike burrowing calibans.

In the Union-Aliance universe this was one of the most "alien" story for me. I really Liked the story and how they evolved on that planet.

This is one of my favourites! Especially the examination of the alien culture.

I read this one more than twenty years ago. It was readable and kept my attention, but I didn’t find it worth rereading for ME, because it spans so many generations. The books I reread have characters that I care about, and it’s harder for me to do that when a given character doesn’t last most of the book.

With that said, it left a definite impression on me. I can recall the initial few chapters and the final chapter quite well, even after all this time.
