Carol (carolfromnc) | 4109 comments Nominations for our October 'Read Around the World' book are now open. In October we will be reading a book set in Europe.

Books set in any European country are eligible for nomination and the author does not have to be from said country (though it might be worth noting if they are). Also acceptable are books set in Europe, but where the country is never firmly identified in the text.

Once the winning book is picked, we will strike that country off the list next time we visit this part of the world

Nomination Criteria
1. Book must be written by a woman (transwomen and women writing under male pseudonyms are women)
2. Book must be set (or at least half-set) in any country in Europe that has not been 'visited' already.
3. No books that have already been group reads (see list)
4. You cannot nominate your own book.

Nomination Rules
1. Give the title, the author's name, and the country (if identifiable) your book is set in.
2. Use the Goodreads 'add book/author' button.
3. Indicate whether you are willing to lead discussion on the book.
4. Try to avoid using this thread for chatter and don't link to any book that isn't your nomination as it makes it very hard to locate what are actual nominations and what is just discussion.
5. One nomination per person.

European Countries we have already visited:
France: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (December 2018)
Switzerland: Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (December 2017).

Nominations will close on August 10.

We're off to a great start with several strong nominations. So far:

Poland: Flights by Olga Tokarczuk. Kristin to lead.

Germany: Go, Went, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck. Anita to lead.

Austria: Chasing After the Wind by Barbara Frischmuth.

Italy: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.

Spain: Uśpiony głos by Dulce Chacón.

Michaela | 422 comments Chasing After the Wind (Haschen nach dem Wind) by the Austrian Barbara Frischmuth, 4 stories set in Austria. I´d rather not lead, at least I´ve never done so. ;)

Michaela, leading the discussion is primarily about getting the discussion going, being willing to comment in the first few days, especially, but also checking in as the month goes on to make latecomers welcome and perhaps give members something to respond to, whether a question or a thought you had that hasn't yet been covered by another reader. If you can support your nomination, if it wins, in this way, so that leading doesn't fall to one of the mods and members have an opportunity to hear more voices than the 3 of us, it's helpful, but not required and we don't want to discourage nominations by making nominators feel as though they are on the spot, so to speak. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the explanation Carol! Should the book I suggested win, I would try that! :)
