James Mustich's 1000 Books to Read Before You Die discussion

I have to say, this was a great book for my first read along with the group. I ended up giving it 3 stars mostly because its not my usual taste in genre, and I found my mind wandering.

Its amazing how much of what was discussed in the book is relative today. For example, how we in America work our tails off but somehow the rich keep getting richer and the poor poorer.
This is not meant to be a political post - but the book could definitely be used to discuss multiple political view points.

Though the character Jake was a bit off his rocker, I found myself really immersed in his tangents with Singer. I was also mad at Antonopolous for being such a crappy friend. I'm assuming he had more medical issues than just being a mute that the author did not elaborate on.

...and can we talk about that ending??? =_(

I haven't started this yet, will probably get to it near the end of the month. But now you have me intrigued!

It is terrific, of course, but so sad. The loneliness is palpable. I read it a few years ago, and sort of blocked it out of my memory because of the feeling of despair I got. It reminded me of Flannery O'Connor's stories, which I love, that same Southern Gothic style. But O'Connor always left me with the sense of possibility amidst the ruins.

Cracking this baby open today! I was really hoping to get to it last month, but somehow my physical reading took a nosedive and I got stuck on The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub for a whole month. Not to say The Talisman was a bad book, I actually loved it. But I've been exhausted lately and I would settle in each night, determined to read 100 pages, and within 20 minutes I'd fall asleep! UGH

This was an interesting one for me. I wanted to keep going and I wanted to stop at the same time. I felt so much for all the characters and the despair and loneliness and the plain underlying misery of their lives and the times. It bothered me so much that in many ways the characters were similar but they couldn't communicate to each other and be understood, almost like they were all talking to each other underwater. And poor poor Singer who to me was the saddest. He had all these people who cared for him and felt he understood them and in the end he only cared for Antonapoulos. I perhaps liked Mick the least, not really sure why, although I did find her love for and interactions with some of her siblings very touching.

Gosh, so much to say about this one, I could probably go on. But it's time for some cake. Lol
