If you name your book Breath - it can only be about one thing - being alive.

And Tim Winton expands this topic and looks at it from all directions: The act of living and breathing. What it means to be alive. What makes us feel more alive. Pushing the boundaries and playing with death. Deep diving where you can’t breath... and even snoring and sleep apnea.

He creates a beautiful coming of age story of Bruce Pike ‘Pikelet’ who grows up by the ocean, with a small cast of character. A friend from a broken home, an older surfer that becomes their hero and his wife.

Part of the book felt like Breaking Point with Keanu Reeves but at some point the focus shifted (just when I was getting a bit tired of surfing descriptions). But don’t get me wrong. Even the surfing bits were beautiful. The way Tim Winton describe nature, the excitement, the fear, the whole scene - was just great.

He definitely created pikelet’s world rich and realistic and it came to life in my mind.

the book was written in the 21 century but it is grounded in the 70s, and I didn't put it in the monthly tag folder. (but would move it if you think it should be there for tidiness)

Susie I loved this book. The audio was really well done which enhanced my experience and lifted it to a five for me.

Idit | 1028 comments I've listened to it as well and loved the narrator.
It's not quite 5 but hovers on the 4-4.5 for me.

I wish they would do half stars in Goodreads. It's very hard to express ourselves with only 5 options

Susie Me too! Or ratings out of 10.
