Alison (alison111) | 4 comments Y'all, I just finished reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell and it's AMAZING. Picture Jane Austen but with magicians. Highly recommended. (And if anyone has read it and can recommend anything similar, please do!)

Kara (karaayako) I really loved it too, particularly the footnotes. I may need to reread it--I read it when it first came out, and I only have a vague recollection of how the plot went.

Heather This sounds brilliant. A quick Google says that the BBC are adapting it into a TV series which will be shown Canada and the US as well as the UK.

I've just finished reading the first Detective Peter Grant book, Rivers of London (Midnight Riot in the US), which sounds similar. It's about a modern day policeman in London who is discovered as a wizard and gets put into training under another wizard policeman.

Kara (karaayako) Alison, if you liked the style, you may enjoy Catherynne M. Valente (although her most popular books are YA). If it was the story, you might enjoy Shadow and Bone.

(I would've recommended The Night Circus, but it looks like you've already read that one.)

Alison (alison111) | 4 comments I adore the Night Circus. I think I actually found Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell by looking up recommendations for people who liked the Night Circus!
