I really liked The Shining. Hope you enjoy it too.

I plan to read Jane Slayre: The Literary Classic with a Blood-Sucking Twist and more plus whatever I get picked at the All Hallow's Read Halloween Online book recommendation swap at the reading for pleasure book club and by my partner on fb.

I have quite a few books planned:

for fiction:
The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch – (readalong)
The Secret History of Costaguana by Juan Gabriel Vásquez (readalong)
The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber

for non-fiction:
One Day a Year 1960-2000 by Christa Wolf (readalong)
Pensées by Blaise Pascal (philosophy project)

for poetry:
Soy Realidad by Tomaž Šalamun
November Boughs by Walt Whitman

and our seasonal play:
The Imaginary Invalid by Molière

the FINAL book (YAY!) for my "Around the World" challenge, which will probably be:
A Treasury Of Australian Bush Painting by Susan Bruce

Readalongs:
The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch which I seem to remember is quite long, so I might not get to
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou until Nov
The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte by Daphne du Maurier (delayed)

And hopefully a free choice or two as the mood takes me :)

This October I will be reading Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. I've already started on it and I'm loving it!

I am hoping to finish The Goldfinch at least

I have edited my post to link titles instead of covers.

I'll be continuing with our Ulysses group read. I'm quite enjoying the book and loving our discussion on it.
Also on-going (just started) is Dombey and Son (so far, this may be the most heartbreaking story of his that I've read) and Horrorstör (which is amusing so far).

I'd love to join in on the The Sea, the Sea readalong but think I'm too swamped with larger books right now. But I'm still contemplating it.

Paula, I'd love to hear your thoughts on both House of Leaves and Dhalgren once you are finished! Sounds like you are in for a month of experimental writing!

All I know for sure is The Secret History of Costaguana for the read along. I still have not decided what to load onto my Ipod.

I am fuming at Downpour. First they told me I could buy Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia in an unabridged version and then it proved to be abridged. I do NOT do abridged books. NEVER! That is why I never read it last month.

Besides the group read Ulysses I plan on reading Frankenstein and a few Koontz novels or other spooky stuff for the holiday. I'm currently reading Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk.

@Alannah - I read the first chapter, OMG it's gonna be good.

@Lee - on Fridays and Saturdays at my local Goodwill certain color tag books are 10 for $2! You can't believe the hoarding that goes on, ha.

For what its worth, I read Kristin Lavransdatter a few years back. Once you get started, you'll want to read all parts. It's not hard reading and the three parts tell a complete story.

On my TBR list, butnot for the moment: too many things to do at work!

I will be reading The Goldfinch and New Grub Street and whatever else I get time for!! Not much, judging by the length of The Goldfinch!!

I'll be reading The maze runner and The Silmarillion .

I have said this a couple of times but I am determined to read And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini as soon as I have finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Then I'm hoping to read If I Stay by Gayle Forman

A bit of a gulity pleasure maybe, but I really liked both the book and movie versions of Hell House. I have read it a few times around Halloween, and I've seen the movie countless times this time of year.

Have you read other Richard Matheson books Cathie? I liked several of them. Many have been made into films too. The Shrinking Man book and the movie version with Grant Williams were both good. I Am Legend dragged in spots, but it had fascinating moments (won't be more specific in case you ever read it), but the movie versions were all awful.

Got recommended to read Hell House for all Hallow's read so will be reading that with Jane Slayre and more.

There are so many books that I own that I have not read yet so I am going to try and get to a few of them in October.

I plan to finish:
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

and then read:
Forgotten
The Lemon Orchard
Dark Places
The Bluest Eye

and then I'll try and so a group read and maybe a Buddy Read as well. Also one of my in-person book clubs is reading: Tenth of December so I will probably read that as well.

I am finishing Sycamore Row

and I plan to read

for sure. I am not sure yet what else I am planning for the month yet.

I've just started The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
Fresh from the public library I have Kristin Lavransdatter, my first readalong!
Then, for my classics challenge, I'll be reading The Turn of the Screw. I was originally planning to read Great Expectations or Dombey and Son by Dickens, but after seeing how lenghty Kristin Lavransdatter is, I decided to opt for something shorter.
Finally, because October means Halloween, I've picked up Sparrow Hill Road, a ghost story.

Giorgia, I very much liked both The Ocean at the End of the Lane and The Turn of the Screw. Hope you enjoy them, and happy reading!
