The Best Of... discussion

I have had The Luminaries checked out, between the doorstop hard copy and finally the wrist-sparing kindle version, with a bit of audiobook overlap just for the heck of it, since May! I finally finished it last night and now I am wandering around the house with my sad cup of tea missing my friends in the gold fields of western New Zealand, circa 1866. One is a opium addicted prostitute; one is a Maori native; one is a luckless Chinese; one is a daydreaming idealist, too young to know a scoundrel before he is sucked in by one; one is a blackmailed politician, one is everyman's friend; and one is dead, under mysterious circumstances. The rest are scamps and scoundrels looking out for their own necks, and all represent the movement of the stars and planets, revolving around the mystery of the dead man and his missing(or found) fortune and the love between the sun and the moon. I'm not sure I know, even after finishing the story, who done what... I might have to start over! (This is the addict speaking - I can quit any time I want to!)

Ever spend months reading an enormous book filled with rich characters and setting and tangled plot, and feel lost when it is over?

Ha! I -always- have both handy...wristy...hippy...necky...footy...heady...achy. But as I did with Luminaries, I'll likely toggle between hard copy and Kindle, with audio overlap for immersion.

Sometimes I take them both together- the joys of getting older. As much as I love Leopold Bloom, that book is frightening- but I read it, and you will too.

Okay. That sounds like a book I NEED to read.
