Overall, I liked it. The case was good, and we had plenty of good Eve/Roarke moments, not much for secondary characters, like Peabody and McNab, and so forth. Also, while being a good, solid case, it was rather standard fare for a case in the 50th book in the series. I would have expected a more impactful and important case for such a momentous moment in a book series, but I guess not. *shrug*

Jennifer | 11 comments Travis, I totally get your reaction, but I had a different take. I have come to love the way Nora seems to set a different tone for each book. In Golden she seemed to want to give Dallas and Roarke (well everybody I guess) a peaceful interlude. I thought of it as like a 50th "anniversary" gift. The last line: "She'd done her job and would hold onto her own peace while it lasted." She and Peabody working together smoothly, she and Roarke in a very good place, etc. Planting the tree together - so sweet! Each book has something unique about it . (How Nora avoids getting all formulaic with this series continues to amaze me.) The unique feature of this case was that the bad guys' intended victims were not the people they killed, but the loved ones left behind. Dallas and Peabody are floundering since the killings seem almost random and there is no motive they can discern. As soon as Dallas makes the connection with the school she and Peabody solve the crime pretty damn quick. Anyhow, I thought the relative peacefulness of this book to be another way of "celebrating" the 50th. And you don't have to worry - "Shadows" will keep you on the edge of your seat! I finished it yesterday. Tried to make it last, but just couldn't!

Wendy (wendykw) | 43 comments Those are excellent points, Jennifer. I liked Golden, because of Eve's recognition of what she has with Roarke. I highlighted several moments, where Eve contemplates her marriage after witnessing the deep grief of the spouses of victims in Golden. I read the In Death series more for those moments than for murders.
Also, any book with great moments of Dennis Mira is worth reading.
