Lanelle | 4033 comments Anyone have an idea for a team name?
Edited to add: this post can be sacrificed for team business, too.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Great, Lanelle! I'm glad you reserved the extra spaces at the front.

From Random.org, I got #28 Water Works – read a book set in a place where there is a shortage of water, because of geographical location or drought. Since we cannot read the number we get, someone else will need to read that.

Not sure how we're going to decide who reads what, but I'd prefer to read #4, 9, 12, 15, 18, 19, 25, or 39.

message 6: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I suck at names so I'll be happy with whatever the group decides. :)

I got 18:

18 = Kew Palace (Monarchopoly) – Read a historical fiction book that features an actual historical person.

I'm glad I remembered to save those posts for team business.

My random number was 17, a un/lucky square. I guess we'll find out later what that will mean.

My daughter and I were brainstorming, and I thought about the old Monolopy game pieces and remembered the top hat. Top Hatt3rs could be a team name. Maybe someone will come up with something better.

Theresa, I live in Arizona. I know of some dry books.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Hello Tasha & Janice! Lanelle, I like Top Hatt3rs!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I've been thinking about how we can assign the books we read. We can't read the one we get from Random.org for the first read, but it's up to the team to decide which members read what. The teams are pretty small, so perhaps we can just claim books as they come up, then swap if need be until we're all happy.

For example, I got #28, and Lanelle says she knows of some dry books, so maybe she claims that. Tasha got #18 which is one of my preferences, so maybe I claim that but say I'd be willing to trade for #4, 9, 12, 15, 19, 25, or 39.

Any ideas on this?

message 11: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4033 comments Sounds good to me. Hopefully someone will offer to keep to keep track of everything soon.

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60058 comments I got #6, Oriental Avenue – My mind keeps thinking of Murder on the Orient Express. Read a murder mystery or true life murder book.

I like Top Hatt3rs!

I can track.... I think!

Tasha I like Top Hatt3rs too. :)

I was thinking along the same lines, Theresa. I think to make things move along more quickly, it makes sense that we claim a number/space as we see something we would be willing to do.

I can help track as well as needed, or whatever to help organize.

Janice (jamasc) | 60058 comments LOL! Go ahead Tasha... I've got Madame Tutti Fruiti to control (or try to control), and a busy month at work, so will gladly pass the torch.

message 17: by Tasha (new)

Tasha haha, I see you did the same while I was typing away... I'll be glad to help since you really do have your plate (or ball) full. ;)

message 18: by Theresa~OctoberLace (last edited Sep 28, 2014 06:31PM) (new)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Janice and Tasha, I love that you both came up with the same plan for tracking. That looks good to me!

Janice, I saw that you raised the point that if we don't draw the second #s until someone finishes the 1st book, we don't have much chance for gophering. I agree with that. I also think that we'll probably need to know more about the points and such before finalizing book choices, even for the 1st read.

message 19: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Good, I'm glad the tracking looks good. I edited it to add what Janice did too. I put question marks until it's clear who is reading what.

I've been thinking about that. I have so many books that I own in one format or other that it should be fairly easy to pick one on the fly.

The only thing is I need a mix of audiobooks and ebooks/paperbooks if I'm going to complete 3 books.

@Tasha - I usually take a back seat on the topplers, and then feel guilty. But it's good for me to not try to do everything, and to let others have a chance. So you be the tracker (not helper to the tracker).

message 21: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm on it!

message 22: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Just so all know, I'm not fancy when it comes to charts and things like that...tracking will be very old school. ;)

message 23: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4033 comments Fine by me. My tracking would be even older-school :)
Half of our team has given a thumbs up for Top Hatt3rs. Shall we go ahead with it?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Lanelle wrote: "Half of our team has given a thumbs up for Top Hatt3rs. Shall we go ahead with it?"

I think you should go ahead and change the thread to Top Hatt3rs. If anyone else chimes in, they'd need to have a dynamite alternate to displace it.

message 25: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm good with it! I will be back tomorrow morning. Looking forward to seeing what goes on while I'm away. Have fun all, good night!

message 26: by Lori Z (last edited Sep 28, 2014 07:32PM) (new)

Lori Z | 2091 comments Hello fellow teammates!
I think the name Top Hatt3rs is great and Tasha your tracking system looks good, thanks for doing it.

I "rolled" a 14 = Virginia Avenue – I was born in Virginia. Read a book that takes place in your hometown/city/county/province/state/territory/country – you get the idea. Try to get close, but don’t drive yourself insane.

As to what I'll read I guess I'll have to wait to see what the others roll.

message 27: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Love the name!

I got 24 = Frozen Flag Pole - Read a book with a cover that embarrasses you. And be sure someone sees the cover.

Theresa, for your drought book, you really could read any Australian book. Half the country is still in drought.

I'm guessing of course, but do you think we have to gain sets like in the real Monopoly?

And like Janice, I have heaps of books on hand I can read so happy to swap if people need and don't have something to read. I put our bookfair buys on the bookshelves last night and now our 7 bookshelves are full (including the 2 huge new ones). I think I need to do some serious culling.

message 28: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4033 comments I'm glad you like the name. It took awhile for my daughter and me to come up with one that was okay.

I have a book in mind for your embarrassing cover.

And I guess the southwest part of the United States isn't the only place that's hot and dry. Places in Egypt probably qualify as well.

I've been trying to figure out how we will 'earn' the properties. No idea yet.

I have plenty of books to choose from as well. My trickiest categories might be horror and sports.

I've seen pictures of your new bookshelves. They're awesome!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I just did a hunt for embarrassing book covers. I seem to have read or gotten rid of most of mine. Thoughts are Succubus Blues Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead or Fetish Fetish (Makedde Vanderwall, #1) by Tara Moss or Grave Memory (Alex Craft, #3) by Kalayna Price Grave Memory or a not so quickly read non-fiction of Sex with the Queen: 900 Years of Vile Kings, Virile Lovers, and Passionate Politics Sex with the Queen 900 Years of Vile Kings, Virile Lovers, and Passionate Politics by Eleanor Herman

The best one we have is The Snow Queen, I just have no desire to read the book, it's cover isn't on goodreads... I shall remedy. But it is description

message 30: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2091 comments I could read for #24. I'm embarrassed to even admit this but I have some "bodice ripper" covers that always embarrass me. In fact, I have a generic bookcover that I use when I read those in public. Of course, I can't do that for this toppler so I'll just have to have a red face, lol. Let me know if this is good with everyone.

message 31: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4033 comments Wow! Snow Queen definitely wins over my lackluster Lady Anne and the Howl in the Dark by Donna Lea Simpson .

message 32: by Theresa~OctoberLace (last edited Sep 28, 2014 09:03PM) (new)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Rusalka, the rules say that for the first round we cannot read a book for the number we get from Random.org. It has to be read by another team member.

So, I got #28 but someone else needs to read a drought book. Likewise you got #24 but someone else needs to read the book with the embarrassing cover.

FYI, I own Tipping the Velvet, which is probably my most embarrassing cover, but I read that last month.
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters

If you figure out those un/lucky squares, will you let me know? I'm guessing we don't have all the instructions yet. I sure wish I knew what my (technically someone else's) reading assignment was.

message 36: by Lori Z (new)

I have something like this:
Fire's Tender Kiss by Patricia Pellicane

Sounds like Jmom will choose those for us. I will let her know in the main thread that we have one.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Lanelle, Jaxnsmom had posted:
Landing on "Do you feel lucky?" (Chance and Community Chest) means I will use the fruit machine to see what card you draw. Some will be good, only a couple will be "meanie", and the others, well, I guess they could go either way.
That means she'll assign the actual number for your un/lucky square.

You are feeling lucky this time, Punk :) Now you need to generate another number.

My new number has been generated and it is 2 - fruitcake. *sigh* I have a book picked out for that category as well.

Looks like he's been spending too much time out on the range with the sheep :)

Thanks Rusalka, for posting about the Feeling Lucky space. I'd rather see it twice rather than miss it altogether!

Love the Snow Queen cover! Reminds me of most of the alien women on the original Star Trek :)

Maybe someone will land there on their second roll!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Remember, Lanelle, that you don't read the book for the number you got. I actually have a couple of books on my TBR list that will fit #2. I can take that if someone else would like to have #18.

Go for it. I do have a feeling though that some of these assignments might get shuffled around a bit as our other team members generate their numbers. Or maybe everything will go smoothly. Right?

message 48: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments If a Toppler goes smoothly in the first phase, that means I've made it too easy.

message 49: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments The "Do you feel lucky, Punk?" spaces are my version of chance and community chest. I have card comments and I use the fruit machine to see which card you draw. Some of them have you move somewhere else, and some don't. If they don't, I will tell you what your card says, and then tell you to generate another number. Top Hatt3rs won 10 points when they landed on Feel Lucky!

All tasks will be worth 10 points, so don't worry about strategizing for points. This is complicated enough as it is.

message 50: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I rolled a 1 read a book that takes place near national park or monument

I haven't had time to see what books I have to fit where. Today is cow pedicure day aka hoof trimming so probably won't have much time if any today.
