This book raised standards of sci-fi for me to an yet unequaled high. It's a tough start (except for the awesome intro I can still picture as if I had been watching a television feed live!), but slowly builds to a wonderful universe of wonder and amazement.I'm not sure I'll have the guts to go through it again, though.. The surprises and twists gone, I'm afraid a second pass would feel a bit burdensome.
How's this reading going? I opted out but am curious as to your impressions as you guys are reading it.

I reached Chapter 18 a few days back and a couple pages into the chapter, I'm easily distracted. Prior to that, I was engrossed and hated to put it down... now, I find that I've picked up some of my other current reads. I think I need to just focus and get through the motile/immotile section to see where it leads and I imagine it will probably snatch me up again... but that part for some reason has stalled me out on an otherwise hugely enjoyable read. :) I'm glad you asked... going to pick it back up today and see where it goes next.
The motile / immotile section is indeed a bit strange, but it does lead somewhere, and, down the line, I really loved the effort put into making us understand them. It allowed us readers really make sense out of the motile actions. But, true, that chapter is a bit wierd and heavy.
@Eric, I forgot to update you! I finished this finally the other day -- I'd been rather stuck on Chapter 18. Without spoiling it for Chris and the others, it was worth working through it! Once I finished the last sentence though, I kept checking the book to see if some pages had fallen out. I somehow hadn't noticed it was 1 of 2! Imagine my excitement. :) All in all, thanks for the encouragement months ago to finish reading it.
@Korky, Nice =)I remember Judas Unchained was just as great, except for the action-packed showdown. But that's mostly just me: I always get super bored with the action scenes in the climax. I much prefer the unfoiling of the intrigue, the discovery, the character development...
Lemme know how you like Judas Unchained.
Ok, I passed the halfway point today. Funny thing is, a few days ago I came very close to giving it the DNF heave ho. But I didn't have anything else on audio I felt like changing to just yet...And now I'm hooked, liking it.....
There was a big party thrown by Justine for political manuevering. It got better when it shifted to Ozzie and Orion.

Oh, and though that book was huge (like this one), it was very readable and well paced. So I'm hoping....
