Here's a model of an exemplar review:

“The best time to cry is at night, when the lights are out and someone is being beaten up and screaming for help.” This quote opens Walter Dean Myers's intense text, Monster, a work of realistic fiction that takes place in New York City during the 1990s. Using journal entries and scripts, the novel tells the story of Steve Harmon, a sixteen year-old accused of being an accessory in the robbery of a convenience store and the murder of its owner. Feeling alienated from society, Steve is forced to reflect upon his own character to determine whether he is in fact the monster that much of society believes him to be. Talented and intelligent, the once aspiring film-maker is now a resident of the Manhattan Detention Center. Dealing with the pressure of disappointing his parents and failing as a role model to his brother Jerry, Steve uses writing to cope with the fear during the murder trial, as he faces the reality of a life behind bars.

Overall, I thought Monster to be an amazing journey. Steve faces many of the same problems that many teens do today. Not only does Steve endure pressure from neighborhood delinquents, but he also struggles with deciding what kind of man he wants to be. Is having strong moral character more important than maintaining his image and proving to people that he has, as the delinquent Bobo phrases it, "heart." Therefore, I would recommend this book my students, for it might encourage them to think twice before making a choice they know to be wrong. Because I think he understands teens so well, I would recommend to Myers that he writes more novels with female protagonists. Girls face many of the same issues as boys, yet novels often portray them as superficial or dramatic. I believe that he his themes about standing up for yourself and resisting peer pressure would also resonate with them and serve as an inspiration for positive decision making. Bottom line, whether his books are geared for boys or girls, teens or adults, Walter Dean Myers's engaging writing style, inspiring themes, and realistic conflicts continue to cause his readers to deeply reflect about the choices they make in deciding what kind of person they ultimately want to be.

Sydney | 16 comments In the book, Unwind, dystopian future parents have the ability to "Unwind" their unwanted children so they can donate their organs for people who need them (Until the age of 18). We follow three teenagers throughout the story, Conner, Risa, and Lev. All three are going to get unwound for different reasons. Conner was a problem child, Risa came from a state home and wasn't worth keeping alive, and Lev was a "tithe" which means he was practically brainwashed as a child into thinking being unwound was always going to be a part in his life. Throughout the book the three of them all try to run away from being unwound and come across different types of obstacles along the way.
Unwind was an amazing and different type of book to read. The entire concept of parenting in this novel is completely unorthodox, for example aside from unwinding your own child you can also "stork" your baby which means you can leave your child on someones doorstep and if they don't catch you it becomes legally theirs. The whole new life style in this book really is interesting and amazing. The only thing I would recommend was that you should be of a certain maturity to read the book. Its not for all people with the entire unwinding concept might be a little to mature for some people. Other than that it was a wonderful book that I would recommend for anyone who has interest in dystopian books.

Well his family was he was teached by the finest teachers during the 1880s he was taught thinks other people couldn't learn. but there was something different he was taught these things for a reason he had destiny it was become a traitor a traitor that's what i said. Throughout the book it shows the life of oct and the things he has to go through during this time with war sicknesses.

I enjoy this book because i enjoy history its amazing to learn that there was people in the old days that were traitor's it makes me wonder the reason why. I wanna ask the author why she didn't add others characters that can be facing the same problem as him almost like if they were training together.I would recommend this book are are who enjoy reading about history and learning new things abut the old days.

Sydney | 16 comments In the dystopian novel "The Maze Runner" we follow the lead of Thomas. A boy who mysteriously wakes up in a unknown place called "The Glade". He has no memories of his past or even about himself and he's surrounded by boys who are exactly like him. Lost. Nobody knows how are why they're there but everyone has a common goal. To get out. The only way they can do that however is figuring out the Maze. At first Thomas immediately wants to join the runners who look for a way out the maze but the challenge is Grievers. Horrible deadly creatures that appear in the maze at night.
I loved this book so much. It's a great storyline of mysterious and freighting adventures. The author did a wonderful job of visually explaining everything in the story. So if you like dystopian novels I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Erika M | 32 comments The book "Uglies" is about a girl named Tally. People were seperated in 4 groups the uglies, pretties, specials, and extras. Tally was in the uglies but Tally really wants to be a pretty. Once you turn 16 you can decide if you want to stay an ugly or an pretty. Tally's friends are already pretty. When she visited her friend in pretty town she also a girl named Shay who was hiding behind the tree while she was hiding in the bushes. Shay and Tally became friends from that day on but there was a problem Shay didn't want to be a pretty.

I like this book because this is something new to me and I'm used to reading horror books. I can make connections with this book because leaving my friends was also very difficult for me. This book is a fiction so I would like to recommend it to people who like fiction because it is a very good book. This book also has a bit of romance, and action. I think the most important conflict was when Tally betrayed Shay just to become a pretty. overall i really like this book.

Mahnoor Zahra | 39 comments The book, Flash by Carl Hiaasen is about a boy named Noah that is just like his dad he is a person that cares about nature but the thing that is different is that his dad doesn't think before he acts. But Noah thinks it all through. This book takes place when Noah's dad is in jail for sinking some guys boat but he is not doing the wrong thing because that guy should be in jail because he is putting dirty water with all bad thing in the ocean where there are animals and people that play near the beach. So the Noah comes up with a plan to save the beach and everything else with the help of his sister and his friend Shelly and they save the ocean.

I like this book because I think it is a true book most people wouldn't care about nature but the main character does and it is a different book from other books. It also teaches s great lesson about life and the right thing to do in life so I think it is a great book. I would give it a 4/5

Mahnoor Zahra | 39 comments The BSG series book Worst Enemies/Best Friends is about a girl named Charlotte Ramsey who just moved to Beacon Street from Paris starts her first day of school she always had the worst first day. On her first day she ruins lots of thing so everyone in her lunch table hate her. One day a girl named Katani Summers asks her teacher to change her table seat but the teacher says if you want that then all three girl will have to have a sleepover at one's house and they all agree. By the end of the book they all end up being great friends.

I think it is a good book because it teaches people that you should not judge anyone because all four girls hated each other and by the end of the book they where best friends it also teaches people that no matter where you live or how bad it might seems you will always find a friend. I will give this book a 3/5.

Erika M | 32 comments In the book "Pretties" by Scott Westerfeld Tally was finally a pretty and popular. Her dreams finally came true. Suddenly Tally felt that something was wrong or missing. She saw a note that she wrote to herself when she was still an ugly. Tally remembered what was wrong with her pretty life. When tally was in a costume party her ugly friend snuck in and told Tally that there was some kind medicine that was given to them that makes them forget about their past. Tally's friend gave her treatment to remember everything. When Tally remember she wondered what happened to David and smokes. Tally escaped pretty town and traveled to smokes with her friends.

Overall I liked the book because it felt like i was in the story and it is very interesting. I would like to recommend this book to the people who like dystopian fiction because it is a very nice book. I have on request to the author. at the end of the book he should have put pictures of how the characters looked like because I really wanted to see how they changed.
