I have never read this, but I am a big fan of Brubaker w Phillips on art in their crime comics. Esp Sleeper, one of my top 10 ever.
Finished up last night, and I'm giving it 4 out of 5 "old chums." Solid plot and enjoyable dialogue throughout. I tend toward supers more so this is well out side my wheelhouse. Nonetheless I think I'm going back for volume 2 of this series.
I've been wanting to give this book a try. It'll make a nice change from the usual superhero fare - though there's nothing wrong with that - and Brubaker is a brilliant writer. Can't wait to see what he does with cops on the mean streets of Gotham.
Read the book and gave it 3 stars. I wasn't really disappointed with the book, more underwhelmed. I was expecting to see more of Gotham in these stories and more of how a workaday cop is affected by the dirty, underhanded antics of the super-villains. I felt underserved on both counts. In truth cop procedural stories are not my thing but I knew Brubaker could places I wouldn't mind going but maybe we were on different pages with this one and the tension in the squad room and the underplayed resentment the cops felt towards Batman left me wanting more.
Slight spoiler for volume 5I finished the series last night and found it consistently exciting. I did find the ending to be a bit of a downer but that's as much as I'm willing to spoil.
My girlfriend might be making this her first batman book. She's not interested in superheroes but this premise has intrigued her and she is watching Gotham with me.

I especially liked the race against time in the first couple of issues. Without spoiling anything it was a plot device that could only be used in this comic. I hope the rest of the series holds similar original ideas.
