Unless I totally missed something at the end of the story, the killer just drives off in his car and after that there's no mention of him going to jail or anything. Did I miss something?

When Melanie Kilduff speaks to Ellery while she is in the hospital she mentions that Peter is in jail, later, when Ryan had come to visit her he told her that he was driving away but they got him in time...that being said even though he was in jail he didn't confess to anything.
