I second this!!
Randy wrote: "The Day of the Triffids would be on my list."Seconded.
Also,
The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells
At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft
Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr.
Michael Shea
There are quite a few novellas that fit this, including "The Autopsy" by Michael Shea; "Something Had to be Done" by David Drake; and "The Wide, Carnivorous Sky" by John Langan.

Too many to choose from, here are some of my favorites though Stinger, Nighteyes, The Tommyknockers, Strangers, Operator B, The Stickmen, Communion: A True Story, The Eyes Of Darkness, The Dover Demon, and Slither.
Given the popularity of recent events and beliefs in UFOs and extraterrestrial life outside our planet, this might be an interesting genre to consider writing in. Also, the Alien franchise may have some influence as well.
