What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I think this book is at least 30 years old. There are two young couples. The primary couple is newly married, struggling financially. I think they live in a basement apartment. The other couple is more well off, maybe wealthy. It might have been the wife's family that's wealthy. They become friends and hang out, maybe at the wealthy woman's family cabin (maybe not). The wealthy woman becomes ill. I think it's cancer. The two couples plan to spend time at the cabin, and everyone is being nice to the sick woman. At one point she thinks they forgot to pack the tea, so they all unpack all the bags. I think the author is well known, and I think his name is William. I thought it was William Styron, but I've looked through several lists of his books, and none of them sound like this.

Other bits and pieces:
The wealthy woman is a bit spoiled and irritating (to me, not necessarily to the other couple).
I think the two husbands work together.

I think it's Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegnor.
