When I started this book I couldn't imagine putting it down. I really wanted to know more about the WWI in Africa. The stories were fascinating but I found myself being very troubled by the way it was written. Still, I hard a time putting my finger on it. Eventually I found that it was full of content but not depth. Edward Paice described some fascinating characters in the struggle for Africa on a surface level but could have told us more about their previous biographies as well more about the over-all political environment they were in. Paice also gives some good descriptions of key battles, but much of the book seems like descriptions of troop movements from place to place, rather than details of what these units encountered. I put this book down at the halfway point because it couldn't hold my interest. I suspect too many details were lost in the editing process. Paice was definitly on the right track, but should have went with a more detailed and larger book.
