Haha that's great Kandice I feel the same way! Okay I'll keep in touch with you about reading this with you and maybe if anyone else comments that they want to read too as I see other King fans around!Kandice wrote: "I plan on reading it the second I get my hot little hands on it!"
I do plan to read it but I want to get it on paperback and unfortunately I won't be able to order it anytime soon. I think I will wait a while for the price to drop. Looking forward to reading your comments, please make sure you use the spoiler tags! :D
I'll get as soon as it gets here, so probably not at release date. Mr Mercedes took like 2 weeks, hoping this one takes, max, around that much.
One of my favorite things about pre-ordering it is the occasional surprise of getting it in the mail the day before I would be able to buy it in the store. You can't count on it, though.
Oh goodness - the audio is narrated by David Morse. I might have to get it in that format. I should probably save listening to it for my road trip around Christmas though. (The only drawback to that is that Mr. Rider gets fatigued listening to audiobooks, but maybe if I do a 30-minutes book/30 minutes music, thing back and forth, he'll stick with it. It'll be about 28 hours of driving round trip - enough to get through the whole book if I alternate like that.)
Richard wrote: "Is this what we're doing next? You ladies don't waste anytime."I think we agreed to do this almost as soon as the group was started! The Stephen King group is doing this for November so I get to kill 2 birds with one stone. :)
The Shining traumatised me when I was a kid. I must admit I never dared pick up another Stephen King since then...
Aww that's such a shame Melas, he is by far my favourite author. He has the ability to trigger responses in me like no other. He's not just a horror writer, he has a great ability to create awesome worlds. I think that if you read his work as an adult your reaction would be different. Besides, not everything is like The Shining. I would recomend starting with Insomnia, it's one of my favourites by him as well.
I know it's high time I get back to it again. Thank you for the recommendation, I'll try to start with this one next time!
I wouldn't have understood The Shining if I had read it as a kid. The various themes would have gone over my head. The book is nothing like the movie. Lots was happening to the author at the time. And he suffered from alcholism and drug use. The struggle is poignant in the book. The slow decline of an addict. The movie just made it all about the gore and didn't concentrate on the more serious themes. If you don't like horror too much, he does write in other genres like Ana said. The Green Mile. Have you read The Shawshank Redemption? Another favorite of mine.
YEs, I think I probably read it too young (I actually never saw the film). I'm not really against horror. I guess I just have to try again, with one of those you recomment here.
Has anyone started? I'm only about 35 pages in, but can already tell I will love it.Who am I kidding? I would love the guys fevered ramblings...
I just got back from vacation, I plan to order the Audible Audiobook tomorrow and get started on it as soon as possible, I am really looking forward to it! I'll post my thoughts on the beginning after I get started!Kandice wrote: "Has anyone started? I'm only about 35 pages in, but can already tell I will love it.

Who am I kidding? I would love the guys fevered ramblings..."Ha! I completely agree!
Oh! And.... we all want to know more about those hot little hands of yours.. ;) /i'm so going to get kicked out of this group
I had stayed away from reviews and peaks at this book so I would be totally surprised. Or as surprised as it is possible to be in today's technological age, but...It has a Frankenstein vibe and for those of you that know me I had a distasteful read of Frankenstein with my library book club last month. O_o
I'm about 100 pages in. Somebody else start!
I love when King writes in a first person POV and this one's name is Jamie. There is also a male character named Kelly. Two of my four brothers are Jamie and Kelly and for some reason it thrills me that he used both names for men in a book when most people think of them as girl names.Super nerd, I guess.
I am not sure how I feel about this book. I grew up with scary Stephen King books and he just does not write scary any more. That is fine, he is a masterful storyteller. I read it in one day so it was riveting and it got me thinking but I am not sure if I loved it or not. I would love to hear others' reactions.
Alright I'm jumping aboard, I just downloaded the Audible audiobook so I'm going to listen to the beginning before going to bed tonight. I'm so excited, the start of a new King book is always the best of times! :)
Hey guys, is everyone done with this? Just wondering if I can move the book to the Read shelf :)
I finished the day after I got it! I was very sad to only give it 3 stars because I had been so anxious to get it. I even went back and re-read the last 75 pages since that's where my disappointment occurred, but it didn't help. :(
Hmm, that's sad. Think King is losing his touch? I had heard Mr Mercedes wasn't that good either. I haven't read either of them.
Ana wrote: "Hmm, that's sad. Think King is losing his touch? I had heard Mr Mercedes wasn't that good either. I haven't read either of them."Not at all! I actually loved Mr. Mercedes. I have learned to approach his work with no preconceived notions. He is not a horror writer (at least not ONLY) and so I look forward to his writing that isn't. MM was straight procedural, which I really enjoy, so I wasn't disappointed. I think the people who were unhappy with it wanted scares and psychic mumbo jumbo of some sort. If it had been written by anyone but King I think it would have been well received and reviewed.
Revival was an example of one of King's failings. Despite adoring the man, I know he has them. He often does a terrible job at ending. This ending sucked like an Electrolux. I think it also hurt the book's reception that it was touted as a "Return to old King", the "scariest and darkest" in years. It was NOT! It was terrific character building, beautiful writing and then a plot corner he wasn't able to write himself out of.
Just my opinion. ;)
Alright, thanks for the heads up, I won't be expecting to be scared whenever I pick it up then :)
I haven't even started the book. November got busy...super busy for me. Sorry. Did want to get into a discussion and read it. I'll try to as soon as things slow down.
I feel bad this has been slow going for me, not because I am not interested but because the holidays with work and family has prevented me from finding time to commit to this. However just this past week I finally downloaded the Kindle edition and so while listening to the Audible I can bump up the audio to 3x speed while reading the Kindle text - and now I'm 59% done. I'm at the part where (view spoiler) I am definitely interested and look forward to finding out what happens next!
Well it took me long enough but I finally finished it! I posted my review, I gave it 3.5 stars overall. Visually stunning ending and I considered it to be Jamie's memoir of his life. I'm glad I read it, it didn't disappoint. But I liked Mr. Mercedes better as far as his recent books/books this year. And that also completed my book challenge for the year, yay! And my Stephen King book marathon, 8 books of his this year, woohoo!
Hope you don't mind but I edited the topic with the book information, it still was missing from the initial one so wouldn't show up when looking up the book page. Also, the Revival edition you linked in your second post is for another book :)
My pleasure! This way anyone visiting the book page can look up this buddy read and your comments, eheh.
