I loved this book, also. My students in both third and fourth grade were fascinated by the excerpts we read. The graphic novel format makes it even more accessible for reluctant readers in my group(reading specialist). So honestly written, so candid, loved how the author didn't hold back on any of her feelings. While it must have been very painful for her, it gives children a true picture of what it feels like to lose one's hearing from someone who knows!
As a graphic novel El Deafo is a challenge for the Newbery Committee as they are charged with looking at text and are not suppose to consider the illustrations unless they detract. (I am very familiar with this as I was on the Committee the year Hugo Cabret came out.) I've done a post proving why the book should and can be a serious contender despite this: https://medinger.wordpress.com/2015/0...

Sadly, I think that bit of history does not bode well for El Deafo. The fact Smile received no award love in its year seems ominous, as well. However, I appreciate your arguments in your post and hope this will be a year of change!
