Revolution discussion

I can't remember what they were called but at one point, Amade Malherbeau talked about a ball the aristocats held where they wore red ribbons round their neck as a symbol of revolution against their friends and families who died at the blade of guillotine.
So is this true? Because many of the facts in this book that I know aren't true are so realistic.
