Ken B | 6812 comments A genre of science fiction that has a historical setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology.

Let's concentrate on horror examples of the genre.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments Steampunk horror?! I didn't know this existed and I've never thought to combine the two and I write horror and just recently started writing steampunk.

There should be more!

Randy Money | 447 comments Not entirely sure about these. I'm not sure the Bear qualifies as horror or the Priest qualifies as Steampunk:
New Amsterdam
Dreadful Skin

Agreed! The delightfully classic Steampunk mixed with the twisted genre of horror would create wonders!

Chandler | 271 comments My favorite steampunk horror novel is Boneshaker Boneshaker (The Clockwork Century, #1) by Cherie Priest . It's the first book in a sci-fi series, but the following books have yet to live up to the first one. It's creepy and full of action throughout, with lots of zombies and great character.

I heard so much about this book when I went to a Steampunk discussion a few months back. All the people recommended it and spoke highly of it.

If you like steampunk, you'll enjoy it. I read it for a college class, believe it or not. I ignored more pressing homework to finish the book as soon as I could.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments My library has it so I may check it out

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments I attended my cities 3rd annual Steampunk Festival on October 26th. I had so much fun and it was great to see all the people dressed up. After attending it, it's made me want to write steampunk and I'm gonna take a stab at steampunk horror!

I've owned this book since it came out; I need to get to it. thanks for reminding me.... ugh

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments This year's steampunk festival in my town is going to be virtual on their YouTube channel. It won't be as good as attending in person but will definitely be good.

I still plan on reading more steampunk horror and I also plan on writing a series of steampunk horror stories.

Lora Milton | 202 comments I believe Whitechapel Gods by S.M. Peters comes into this category.

message 15: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments Now that I've written my first steampunk novel I'm eyeing on writing a Steampunk horror novel at some point in the future.

Michael F Simpson | 5 comments I had no idea Steampunk horror was a thing. I scrolled past this post and was like, 'Yeah, that really should be a thing!'

message 17: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments Right? It's quite an interesting blend of genres.

I think the problem is horror is typically regular people up against something abnormal. Otherwise it becomes dark fantasy.

message 19: by James (new)

James Seger (jseger9000) | 34 comments But if you are looking for steampunk with horror elements, you might like the Pax Britannia books. Steampunk stories that mix with werewolves and Lovecraftian monsters.

There's two series that are part of Pax Britannia. The Ulysses Quicksilver books by Johnathan Green (starting with Unnatural History) and the El Sombra trilogy by Al Ewing (starting with El Sombra).

I'm joining the bandwagon of just now discovering the genre and advocating for more steampunk horror!

message 22: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments Welcome aboard S.K! There definitely should be. I'm definitely going to write one at some point

message 23: by Heather (new)

Heather | 356 comments Not a book, but Halloween Horror Nights had a premise called "Saws 'n Steam." The idea was that the water that powered the steampunk tech the world ran on had dried up, and people were desperate to keep the machines running.

Just saying, chainsaws seem like a terrible way to harvest blood.

Two Envelopes And A Phone The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers was included in Horror The 100 Best Books by Stephen Jones , and it happens to be my favourite book. Definitely loaded with Horror elements, including a werewolf.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments Did not forget about this! Steampunk Horror...just the name gives me interesting chills.

message 26: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments I wrote a Steampunk horror short story for an anthology back in 2020 called The Strange Case of the Velvet Strangler. However, when Covid happened they stopped production on it. Still hoping it gets published!

message 27: by Paula (new)

Paula (pad1069) | 61 comments "Steampunk Cthulhu" is an interesting horror anthology that combines Steampunk and Cthulhu Mythos themes. Well worth reading to see those two genres blended together. The editors are Brian Sammons and Glynn Owen Barrass and it's in Kindle and print.

message 28: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments I can totally picture Cthulhu and his tentacles being operated by gears

message 29: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3051 comments So not only do I need to read some more steampunk horror but I still need to write a story I have called The Industrious Golem of Whitechapel

Interesting. He seems to have written a lot of horror westerns as well. Some of my favorite genres.
