Does it have to be a horror book? I think he (and all of you)would enjoy City of Thieves by David Benioff.
I'd recomment ''The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents''. Everyone who has read it knows it's not the usual Terry Pratchet book, as it talks about true horror and panic. An excellent story that takes you by surprise with how suddenly it gets dark.

I know there are different schools of thought about whether the Discworld books can/should be read out of order, but for a group read, we'd want to go in order of publication.
