What is it that makes death scary?

How does the good news of the gospel give us hope in the face of death?

I learned tonight that a friend I went on my first short term mission with passed away unexpectedly. It made me sad, I realize not for him but for us here who will miss him. I also wondered if he was scared or in pain ... so much is still unknown about the experience of dying. At the same time I ultimately felt joy for how much of God he is experiencing this very moment.
