i am making some drawings and short storys for a new picture book. i have not written a picture book before posting my ideas to this blog http://figinshortstory.blogspot.co.uk/

I have a story stuck in my head that I can't get rid of, but am just going to have to do to make it go away and leave room for a new one lol.

it's about a stick insect who can't figure out why his friend wont talk to him... turns out he's trying to talk to a twig...

the only ending that is coming to me is "they all drink lemonade"... which .... is less than ideal lol

any other ideas to end it with?

I have been working on "Boogie in Bluestown" which will be very different from Journey to Jazzland :). More poetry I think since Blues is more poetic. I do have to be careful and not discuss depression with kids. The premise is that the main character "Etta Blue" is really sad and wants to learn more about how music can help lift her spirits.

Okay, that worked. The pictures are incredible. Lively and funny. However, there seems to be a lot of text for a picture book. Have you done a word count? For this type book, publishers recommend 600 words. They will go as high as 800 if it is really needed. You might find my post on critiquing picture books helpful.

Thanks Bonnie. Your link is helpful. The book is targetted for grade 3/4 reading level. When I was researching many said 1200 to 1500 words which the word count falls within. I'm open to hearing more of your thoughts.
