Maritza Caceres The book “Boy meets Boy” by David Levithan. Focuses on Paul’s journey as he discovers at a young age that he is gay and his growth. He finds out he is gay through his kindergarten evaluation notes. His parents are accepting and supporting toward him. Luckily, he has experienced an environment that recognizes and accepts him for being who he is. Paul is a sophomore in high school. He has friends who care about each other and want the best for each other. The overall main idea for this story is a coming out story. Throughout the book, we see many different sides of the boys own turmoil and struggles to find their identity. Some are able to understand who they are at an early age while others are held back due to family and beliefs.
I really enjoyed reading this book since it reminds me of a teen drama. However, this story has substance that can help someone rather than provide simple entrainment. Being able to see both sides of a coming out story really put me in the shoes of the boys. We see an accepting side while also seeing a harsh reality that not everyone will accept this outcome. One of the boys named Tony unfortunately had to experience the lateral. One of his parents accepted him but wasn’t easy for them, while another simple turned their back. This is a reality many people face. Some will loose people close to them while others forge stronger bond. I would recommend this story to high school students so that they can be more perceptive of their classmates. Something that captivated me is that no matter what your sexuality is someone will always be there rooting for you, it may come in the shape of friends or family.
