TobinTelder Just finished reading Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His writing, while overflowing with words that make you run for the dictionary, is clear, concise, and just downright pleasurable to read (or in the case of his Washington bio, to listen to). The book is eminently fair to all of the people involved. Hamilton is shown for the genius, patriot, firebrand he was, he is also shown to be hotheaded, an adulterer, and a war hawk. He was always so paranoid that France was going to invade and southerners would join them in overthrowing the country. Hamilton's many enemies get just as fair a treatment, even Aaron Burr.

Burr's life was hard. A good majority of his close relatives died when he was a very young child. He grew up to fight honorably in the Revolution and was an accomplished lawyer. He was also very good at running elections. His lack of principles and the ease with which he changed his positions calls his character into judgement. His real villainy shines through at the duel. I'm not sure why Lin-Manuel Miranda made Burr a sympathetic figure in his play. It seems to me that he was out for blood.

agreed!!

Judith Kerr Wonderful book! Really recounted most of the war for independence. Now I realize Hamilton`s importance, and at such a young age. I think there is a book by his wife about his life.
