The Queen of Air and Darkness or The Witch in the Wood by T.H. White, the second part of The Once and Future King, published in 1939, the retelling of King Arthur's life after the coronation, chapters IX to XIV.

I read the last paragraphs today, and felt a relief when it was over. It was really a strenuous read... I have no idea why, because I enjoyed the first book. Maybe the dark characters introduced in this story and the emphasis on them rather than on Arthur himself. The questing beast and king Pellinore were still a joy to read about, though. The horrid conclusion to this book does not help the case for the next books, although the author does its best in making us understand why it must be so..

I hate to say it, but the third book is even harder to get through...
