Ajatashatru is not pronounced as "A jackal that ate you" .Not even close ...u can search rajputs on Wikipedia. People with the surname Rathod/Rathore are Rajputs "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajput" who used to be warriors/kings ...not Fakirs /saints etc.
I would be really surprised to see a Rathore/Rathod fakir.Maybe he/she is a fake rathore/Rathod
Should have done some research as far as surnames go in India.

I don't think the pronounciation guides in this book are serious. I read it in German and laught heartily because they transmitted additional jokes so I guess the surnames were chosen for the sake of "can you create a pun out of it" and not for the sake of any accuracy.
(Kudos to the translator who had to create new puns for German, btw)

I agree with @Katherina. The pronunciation of the name is not consistent, and changes every time the name is exposed to the reader, making it a funny and comedic.
