I finished Mr. Splitfoot this week, which was supposed to be my first spooky read of the season, but wasn’t actually very scary at all. Now it seems I’ve mismanaged my library holds and have had a tonne come up at the same time so my Halloween reading may be out the window. I’m currently listening to The Institute, but I’m not sure I’ll finish before it’s due back in a few days. This one classifies as Halloweenie, but the others I have on the go do not. I’m reading The Doll Factory, another long awaited hold and I have The Water Dancer and Olive, Again in the queue for listening. This is getting stressful! Not to mention the rest of the Giller shortlist I'm hoping to read. I love reading goals, reading lists, etc. but sometimes they just add unnecessary pressure.
I'm in the same position as you, Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺. Eight of my long awaited holds arrived all at once so I'm feeling panicked...especially as I also have a big family celebration to plan. Obviously, I will need to quit work. There's important reading to be done, and it's important to get one's priorities right ;)My Canlit read of the week was the eerie and gothic Agnes, Murderess, set in BC during the gold rush. Really enjoyed it.
I've got a few things on the go right now: On the Plain of Snakes: A Mexican Journey which I'm finding kind of depressing. And so far I'm loving Jess Kidd's latest novel,Things in Jars.
On audio I'm still being dazzled but wonderful buggy anecdotes in Buzz, Sting, Bite: Why We Need Insects.
And I'm looking forward to starting The Governesses, another spooky-ish read (I hope).
Happy reading to all!
Happy Friday!!This week I finished reading Cold Storage and listening to What I Know for Sure and Naturally Tan.
I feel your dilemma about library holds. They tend to all come in at the same time!! These days I am putting books on my "wish list", waiting for the numbers to go down before reserving the books. Or I would "pause" them if I notice too many with similar positions. That way, I still have the position # but deferred.
Currently reading What If It's Us, a YA book and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, which many of my friends loved. Also listening to another true crime podcasts called Body Of Proof. Next audiobook is Daughter of Family G: A Memoir of Cancer Genes, Love and Fate, a memoir by Ami McKay.
Have a great weekend!
Susan you forgot to mention reading socks!I am so on the bus with library holds. Five great titles are all
in this week-it's crazy and I know I won't be able to renew one of them because they're all brand new. This happens every time. Same with overdrive. I don't see a point in putting books on hold through overdrive because they all come in at the same time. I think there's
a mischevious Book Fairy who is responsible for this.
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this little politics-free zone of the true north, strong and free.
I'm late to the party, as I was on a little getaway to visit friends.Since I last posted, I finished Lampedusa: A Novel. I liked but did not love this one. The writing was beautiful but I did find my mind wandering a bit while I was reading it. I also finished Anne of the Island, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also read Brown Girl in the Ring on audio while driving on my trip. It wasn't entirely my thing but it is a well-done audiobook. Bonus: all of these books filled squares on my bingo card, so I am now up to 20 squares completed!
I'm currently reading The Other Americans, which is shortlisted for the National Book Award. I'm enjoying it but I'm not 100% sure it's an award-type book. I also started Tangerine on audio while driving. It's fine but a little melodramatic for my tastes.
