I enjoy reading books where one of the main characters is learning the ropes in a new situation. We have read as a group quite a few of these. For example:

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet fits. Probably also The Warrior's Apprentice as Miles joins the mercenaries.

Sten is a series of this, as young Karl goes through various stages of life and aspects of society.

They look really good!

The Sculpted Ship has a fairly strong theme of "learning the ropes" (and is a good read.)

A lot of great suggestions here! We’ll do this theme in the next set of nominations.

And yes Sculpted Ship is a good read. Still waiting for the sequel though....
