NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11273 comments This is the second installment in a solid, intelligent mystery series set in London during the period between WWI and WWII. Maisie Dobbs is both a private investigator and psychologist. That seems like a logical combination of skills to me, but you rarely see that on a business card! She was a nurse during WWI, and she was once "in service" for a wealthy family, and she uses these experiences to solve her cases. Some of the issues in this case seem ahead of their time, both in terms of psychology and approaches to addiction, but they're not overly anachronistic. (A key character struggles to overcome an opium addiction that began after he was injured in the war.)

This series is a good choice for people who like historical fiction and intelligent mysteries. It's less violent than many crime series, but more realistic than many cozy mysteries.
