I may not be around much longer.

Just had a notice flash up that after January 1 Goodreads will no longer be accessible from my browser without upgrading it.

My OS won't accommodate any further upgrades, and, even if I did have the $$ to install an upgrade on the OS, I think my system is old enough that it would only go one OS higher — not worth it. *sigh*

Will IV (drquadrilateral) ?? I make my living in IT, I can guarantee there is a way I can make sure you have access to this site without paying extra.

Karen Do you have a smart phone Renee? I was using mine for everything until I got my iPad through my employer, it was inconvenient using our computer for things like good reads for several reasons. What about a refurbished iPad or computer? There are payment plans out there. Just thinking of ideas.

Any college town has a place that buys and refurbishes old computers and resells them for pennies on the dollar. You can get a PC for $50 probably.

No smart phone, Karen. Right now I've barely got a phone. Once I find a job (the job market here is pretty terrible) I may have to upgrade, phone and computer, although for what I do there's absolutely nothing lacking on this one except for sillydamn stuff like this.

Will, I'm running a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, (Mac) OSX 10.5.8 on a refurb I got from Wegener Media in 2011.

Yay for circumventing planned obsolescence. What a racket.

Roger Jackson Renee,

Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, you might could use Chrome or Firefox. Just a thought.

I'm using Safari. I may try Chrome. In the past Firefox has driven me to truly creative language.

Will IV (drquadrilateral) Chrome is an excellent browser. Highly recommended.

Thank goodness for Chromium!

Chrome is much better.

I've used it in the past, when it first hit, truth be told, lol! I even signed in to gmail in its first days. It was definitely a huge improvement on Firefox . . . and IE doesn't even bear mentioning.

For some reason I just have never liked having several browsers on my machine. It makes no sense, I know.

Gods, no. I don't even like to shop.

And I fear I'll be back in it, on the work end . . .

Oh, sorry. I know that one. Hope you find something else.

Thanks, Kallie.

Helluva situation for a really good paralegal.

It is. I wonder if there is on-line work. I suppose you've checked that out though. I've found editing/writing jobs that way in ESL.

I actually hadn't thought about that, Kallie. All of my work as a paralegal has been client contact and investigatively intensive (I've spent way too many hours sitting in booking rooms in jails talking to clients, lol) and it really hadn't occurred to me to try that.

Kallie | 268 comments There used to be an on-line 'temp' service called Odesk, an agency for worldwide work. I went back to school before I found anything, but they did seem to have a variety and quantity of work, and practices in place to protect freelance writer/programmer (etc.) interests.

I did get one very good long-term job via the ESL CUNY on-line work website. There are other, more literary work sites. So that is a possibility for writers since many telecommute these days.

Out of curiosity I will also look, Renee. I want to finish my SW studies thesis by May and need to have a work search plan before then. I want to get more educational writing work as my writing 'day job.'

Thanks for those sites, Kallie. I'll be giving them a look.
