Leslie OK, I am staking my spot here on El Toro for 2020. Perhaps I might make it higher or perhaps I won't reach the peak but this feels like a comfortable goal.

Thanks Bev - this is the one challenge that I managed to stick to this year. And I do need the motivation it gives me not only to read those already owned books but also to rein in my acquisition of new ones!

Me too...though, it really doesn't restrain me much in the way of bringing more books into the house....

Leslie Oh dear, I am already behind - I have gotten 4 6 new books to only one read!

message 17: by Leslie (last edited Jan 05, 2020 07:29PM) (new)

Leslie I have finished my second book, *The Wings of the Dove. I own the Kindle editions The Wings of the Dove Volume 1 of 2 and The Wings of the Dove Volume II as well as the audiobook edition to which I actually listened so in a way it was 3 steps to the peak in one! And that is the most positive thing I can think to say about it...

Oh, and perhaps I should explain that although I list all three books in my Jan. list, I only count them as 1 in my total.

message 18: by Leslie (new)

Leslie 4 done now so my 6 new books are slightly less shaming...

message 19: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I have finally managed to break even with the number of new books obtained. Fingers crossed that I don't go back into the hole :)

message 20: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I need to read at least one paperback book for this challenge this month! Off to look over my shelves...

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) You're doing well so far! I am going to try, like you, to balance my purchased this year with read from shelves from previous years. It's difficult. lol. Last year I acquired over 800 books (physical, ebook, and audio combined plus free and purchased)...and I did not read 800! lol. But this year I want to be more conscious of what I'm taking in and taking out. I've acquired 13 books so far this year (and I also have 14 preorders for the year) and I've read 12 from my shelves. So I am VERY pleased about that! I have stopped receiving BookBub emails and basically any discount ebook emails because my habit of buying cheap (and free) ebooks is out of control. lol. I'm not on Facebook anymore so unless I physically see a sign for a library sale, I will not know when they are. Because I have brought home 50+ books per library sale. I'm getting better!! But books are not a bad addiction to have. ;)

message 29: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I had to unsubscribe and otherwise avoid a lot of those sites and groups too - that temptation of the free book is so hard to resist! And library sales - not only do you get great books at an incredibly cheap price but you get the glow of doing some positive for the library.

I wish you success in your struggle! And if it helps, check in here and we can commiserate together about our lack of success.

That's my struggle, too! I hardly buy any new books these days, but every time there's a Children's Hospital Book Market I buy like 20-30 books! And then there's the Friends of the Library book sale, where I usually get a good stack.

So many good books it is hard to avoid! And as you can see, I haven't been doing well at cutting down my acquisitions.

Carla B (carlamwestyahoocom) | 52 comments I still get bookbub but only allow myself the freebies. that way there's no guilt if they sit, and they take up no space!

I used to think that way (and still do to some extent) but eventually those books need to be read or what is the point? Honestly, I don't know if at the rate I am going I will ever actually read all the books I have before I die!

I picked the same Audible freebies! I have not listened to them yet. I usually save them for Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon or 24in48 Readathon because they're short and quick.

message 38: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I put them off too - often until the next year when they count in this climb (lol).

Yes I am! Buuut I'm in quite the library groove right now. I have 2 Overdrive accounts and them holds are piling in! I managed to suspend a bunch but I have 4 to read or listen now! So climbing the virtual mountains now! lol.

message 44: by Leslie (new)
