In November our mental health fiction group read is The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Main character has ADHD and dyslexia.

Description:

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse - Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

Please use this thread to post questions and comments at any time.

Read this a while back, I'm not the target audience but it is enjoyable and fun. really ignited my interest in greek and roman mythology. Characters are very wholesome too.

Rain ((A 1,000 yrs of nothing, it’s a heartbeat, I’ve never been ready.)) (raindropsmix) I’ve read both the Percy Jackson series through 3 times. And the Roman series 7 times. I love them.

Have you read The Red Pyramid and/ or The Sword of Summer?

RM(Alwaysdaddygirl) (alwaydaddygirl) | 541 comments I doubt if I read this open. That is just me.

If I may ask, why so many times? What stands out for you? I think it interesting when books are reread.

April | 3 comments Hello! Just joined. Was going to just read and observe for a bit, but I actually have been wondering about something on this book for a while. Yes, Percy is diagnosed with ADHD in the human world, but im wondering, does he actually have it if he is a god's child? I mean, werent all of his symptoms only because he had special powers... as i think about what ive just said, it is pretty empowering to think that folks with adhd could be special or have special powers... i guess, it just bothers me that it is not actually the adhd that is special but that he is a god child. Like, the people with adhd should be appreciated just as much, but obviously they cant manipulate water, but they do have "special powers," right? Sorry, I just was looking for a bit more hope for those who suffer this illness, not that the story wasnt wonderful. I loved it! Hope i can read more in the series too.
