Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) | 9 comments So I'm about 70% through the 2nd book in this series. Everyone I know just LOVES this book but it's only so so for me. I keep finding myself bored!

:(

Does the series pick up in book 3 or should I just put it down now? Appreciate your input - and feel free to recommend another series!

Practical Mike | 35 comments My input, since you asked... I saw too many goodreaders classify this series as romance or paranormal romance and figured it wouldn't hit my tastes. So I passed on it. I won't comment on the quality of the series going forward.

Instead I'll recommend some series I've enjoyed with the caveat that I am a "dude". I will add that a series has to have more than just explosions, gratuitous violence, and chain mail bikinis to get my recommendation though. I like a good balance of character and plot and some romance is ok, but I prefer the hot and heavy happen off screen.

*Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia
*The Grimnoir Chronicles by Larry Correia
*The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
*The Hollows by Kim Harrison
*Alex Verus by Benedict Jacka
*Peter Grant by Ben Aaronovitch
*The Secret Histories by Simon Green
*The Ex- Series by Peter Clines (zombies and superheroes)
*Mercedes Thompson by Patricia Briggs
*The Horngate Witches by Diana Pharoah
*Mindspace Investigations by Alex Hughes (1 and 3 are pretty good, 2 is alright)
*Necromancer by Lish McBride (YA but aimed towards the older youth, also lol funny in places)
*The Elemental Assassin by Jennifer Estep (guilty pleasure)
*Iron Druid by Kevin Hearne (series loses steam around book 4, first 3 I thoroughly enjoyed)
*The Rook by Daniel O'Malley (think second book is getting ready to come out)

Other Fantasy type series:
*The Ryria Revelations by Michael Sullivan
*Eddie LaCrosse by Alex Bledsoe

SciFi:
*The Chaplain's War by Brad Torgersen (only one so far, but really good if you're into Mil/SF)
*The Destroyermen by Taylor Anderson

That's the best of what I've read lately.

Dawn (dawnv) | 367 comments I am a fan of the series but if you are not into it by this book it probably is one that is not for you. Like Mike said this is a PNR series. I would be happy to recommend books but I am not sure what you like or what you are looking for.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 822 comments For me, the series has gotten better with each book. I felt like the first one got bogged down with the world building.

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) | 9 comments Thanks Practical Mike!

I'm a huge fan of the Rachel Morgan series so I'll have to look into your recommendationss.

Great list!

Davinia (davinianl) | 33 comments I've read the whole series and for me they've gotten better and better. But I do get frustrated by the sheer amout of sexscenes. The last book however is more of the story and less of the sex and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll keep on that path as I really like the overall storyline and love the romance (if not the sex)

I like Nalini's Psy-Changeling series more, but this series has the same "problem" even so I read and pre-order everything the woman writes, because I love the storylines and have to know where she is going with it. The characters have almost become real people in my mind and I keep wondering what will happen with the rest of their lives... How fan-girly of me :P

This is the trade off with PNR I think and I am just grateful she does them well.

Davinia (davinianl) | 33 comments I'm sorry, maybe I'm just naive but PNR stands for paranormal ROMANCE, not paranormal erotica. And I have nothing against some sexscenes, like you said at least Nalini writes them well. I just WISH there were less of them.
That said I still read everything Nalini writes, so I can't complain too much :p

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) | 9 comments Yea... I gave up - couldn't read anymore.

sigh...

message 11: by Davinia (new)

Davinia (davinianl) | 33 comments Have you tried Nalini's other series Psy-changeling? Of the two that one is by far my favorite.

Or to go with other authors:
Mercedes Thompson by Patricia Briggs
Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews

message 12: by Kelleigh (new)

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) | 9 comments Yes, I read the first two books in her Psy-Changeling series and I did not like it at all!

I'm definitly the minority though!

I did like Mercedes Thomposn - but didn't like Kate Daniels

I can't figure out what else to read, so I just started a re-read of the Night Huntress series which is one of my favs

: )

Thanks for the rec's though!

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl La Pa (cheryllp) Have you tried the Shaede Assassin series by Amanda Bonilla or the Shadow Reader series by Sandy Williams? I loved both these series, while I found that Psy-Changeling and Kate Daniels weren't for me. Night Huntress is one of my favourite series too!

message 14: by Kelleigh (new)

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) | 9 comments I did read the first Shadow reader series but it didn't grab me like I was hoping. I'll check out the Shaede Assassin series though!

Thanks! :)
