What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

This book must have come out fairly recently; I got it at the library and I was fairly bored by it and didn't finish, but my nephew wants to know what it is.

It's about a kid in middle or elementary school who learns that he's a fire mage. He lives with his mom, who is a little "off", and his stepdad, and he meets a talking jackrabbit who is a fire jackrabbit-- like perpetually on fire. His fire is sparked by his emotions. His stepdad might be evil. There are a lot of elementals and things in the forest. There's some kind of evil hidden in the ground underneath his state capitol. Help?
