Title: The Sugar QueenAuthor: Sarah Addison Allen
Would you recommend? It was a quick read and one of the only books that interested me for this prompt. But to quote Milena (above), "It was OK, nothing special."
Title: Beneath the Sugar SkyAuthor: Seanan McGuire
Would you recommend? Not for my adults. Usually I like YA stuff but this whole series seems to just be written (and not well) for middle schoolers who feel displaced. Like Glee in fantasy book form. Not for me. The premise intrigued me but meh. At least it was short.
Title: Lost Kingdom: Hawaii's Last Queen, the Sugar Kings and America's First Imperial AdventureAuthor; Julia Flynn Siler
Would you recommend? It's non-fiction and a little dry. So, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really interested in Hawaii and the last queen, as the last queen (whose name I am not even going to attempt to type) is the main focus.
Title: Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's FutureAuthor: Pete Buttigieg
Would you recommend? Yes.
Title. Challenger DeepAuthor. Neal Shusterman
Would you recommend? Yes- very much. I don’t typically like books written in this style- chapters 1-3 pages long and switching perspectives with each chapter- but think it worked really well in this case to show the state of mind of the main character. I thought the book was really well done and very respectful of its subject matter.
Title: The Poppy WarAuthor: R.F. Kuang
Would you recommend? I found this book very disturbing so I wouldn't recommend it. That being said, it was disturbing because the author made her world and its war real. I want to know what happens in the next book but I don't think I can stomach reading it.
