This week, I read Girl Code. This book was written by two world famous videogame coders, Andrea Gonzales and Sophia Houser. The genre of this book is young adult nonfiction. This story was written to inspire young coders, both female and male. This book was about how Gonzales and Houser met at the Girls Who Code summer camp and got together to create a videogame that went viral. The game is called “Tampon Run”, which I have never heard of, but apparently it is pretty famous. Their original goal of creating this game was to break down sexism and to help young females not feel so awkward about menstruation. Throughout this book, they explain how they started off as insecure, quiet teenagers and become empowered, famous young women. They also talk about how they are using coding to reach out to many groups of people and how it can be used to inspire many. The main theme of this book is finding your voice and developing confidence. I can’t choose which one of the others I like better, they are both pretty funny and speak very confidently in the book. When creating the game, they were in high school, now they are continuing computer science at separate colleges. Andrea Gonzales is at the University of Carolina, and Sophia Houser is at Brown University. The authors explained that they were shocked at the changes that can be made through the internet and messages that can be passed on to the world through code, and this is what continues to inspire them.
