Be still and know that he is God and that he is already where I am at and that I needn't to go somewhere else to hear Him. He speaks in the silence of my thoughts…for it is the silence of my own mind which brings the "thunder" of God into my being. It is rather odd to say that while in church I rarely hear His voice. I think this is because we can often be quite noisy with the wonderful music filling the air and the busyness of all it's service and functions.

Laura, how do you attain to, and stay in that place of abiding? Can you define what "abiding" means to you?

Gregg, I smiled when I saw your comment that you rarely hear His voice in a church service -- because for a very long time in my life, I could always hear Him more frequently, and also more clearly, in the church gathering. I think it might have been that the corporate coming together multiplied the manifestation of His presence.
At this point in my life, I do tend to hear the Lord more in the quiet of my own personal times with Him. Seasons change, and so do the ways God reveals Himself to us.

I hear you Lee, when all is said and done God reveals Himself in many ways and in many "seasons' of activity. Nothing prevents Him from being heard….only one's refusal to listen waste the opportunity to hear His abiding presence which always comes with a "word" for my blessing.
How I clear the way to abiding on the practical level is the basics; confessing sin as soon as I'm aware of it and listening to the Spirit to help me avoid sinning before it happens. Sin for me these days seems to come at me from the spiritual angle, like judgmental thoughts, a critical spirit, and pride. It's harder to explain on the spiritual plane, though, Lee Ann. I 'reach' into myself and feel for the Presence of the Lord there where it lives when I am connected to Him. It is a place of overwhelming joy, peace, the spirit of praise and the willingness to obey that is there when I am in fellowship.
If it's not there, then I have to go search through the basics and see where I got out of joint, you know, where sin got in.
Maybe they are actually both the same, because sin anywhere removes the possibility of finding the place of peace and joy. The peace and joy are God's, and the confession and obedience are what puts me in the place that I can experience it.
A daily prayer time (conventional prayer, you know... quiet place, focused communion with the Father, a give and take of communication) is what helps me to be in the place of abiding or fellowship. If I'm 'in' then I'm usually talking to God all through the day, thanking Him for what He does for me and praying for those whom I pass by when God drops some insight about them into my mind. I don't mean that I'm constantly in conventional prayer, but that I'm just quickly speaking to the Father as I go through the day, just as if, I guess, He were standing there next to me. And just as simply and without fanfare, He might respond.I thought that this was going to be pretty easy to explain, but it turns out that it's not! (: Hope that this answers your question.

Yes, I would say that is a very clear explanation. Thanks for taking the time to write it all out!

Something I do is go facedown on the floor in my parlor, which is also my prayer closet. There is something about being in this humble position that is very effective in hearing Him.
Daily repentance keeps me confident with a clean heart before God. Rid yourself of all hindrances, this way the Spirit flows freely and his word can be received more clearly. We abide by keeping our minds and hearts fixed on things above and nor below.
