Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 808 comments I was disappointed in this book, which is 90% about Gloria Vanderbilt. I’d not have finished it if it weren’t the selection for a book club. I like Cooper and hoped to learn more about him, but it isn’t there. Vanderbilt’s life is nothing I admire and hearing about it through her wandering self-absorbed thoughts was not a pleasure. Her ramblings are full of clichés, repeated many times but they don’t add up to a coherent picture. It’s often hard to tell who is speaking when a new paragraph starts.

Frankly I’m surprised Cooper allowed this book to be published. Better editing might have helped, but, in the end, his name is on it. A question I couldn’t quit asking myself was whether the cover photo is really Gloria Vanderbilt at age 91. If so, I’m afraid it says a lot about her vanity. I thought it was creepy and it reminded me of Dorian Gray.
