Hello. My name is Julie.
I was quite surprised to realize that there wasn't an ACTIVE group (or at least not one that I could find) about read alouds for children.
I joined Goodreads in 2011, but I've never been a part of a book club, so this is all a bit new for me. I am always open to suggestions as to how we can make this group work for everyone.

Let's see, a bit about me. I've always been a voracious reader. Books have always been my favorite teachers. Lessons learned from books seemed to stick with me more than the lessons taught by classroom teachers.
I've spent 7 years working at Barnes & Noble, 7 years at our local public library as a children's librarian and I recently received my teaching degree after working towards it for 20+ years (Life had a way of interrupting my studies.)
I have a daughter who's also a voracious reader. She is now a grown adult working towards her teaching degree in secondary education. More power to her! I think the older students would eat me alive. :)

Books that were read aloud to me by my mother or my teachers and have stuck with me since childhood: My Friend Flicka, Nancy Drew, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, The Great Gilly Hopkins, Pippi Longstocking, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, The Wishing Tree, Seven Alone (or On to Oregon!), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Little House on the Prairie and many more that aren't coming to me at the moment.

I look forward to hearing which books from your childhood made an impact in your life.

April (reader_in_april) | 3 comments My name is April! I have a 4 year old son and another son on the way. I have been reading alot this year and I have been reading to my son since he was born. We read at least 3 books a night or else I don't think he would go to bed. I love reading him books, especially ones that I loved as a child. My parents rarely read to me as a child so it was important to me when I became a parent to do this for my son. It is something I truly love to do with him and we have discovered so many amazing books!

That's awesome. My favorite way of getting extra sleep time when my daughter was little was filling her bed with board books which would keep her busy at least for an extra half an hour. :)
Then, when she was in 3rd grade, she was tested at having a high school reading level. I had to tell her that I just couldn't keep up with everything she was reading and I'd just have to trust that what she was reading was appropriate. Does one have to do with the other???? Maybe. ;)

I would love to have you join the group, such as it is at the moment. lol. I have another resource you might be interested in here on Goodreads. When I worked for the library and had extra time, I would go through the picture books, pick my favorites and make a lists about them. I think I have some obscene amount like 80 lists of preschool books. And as you and your son(s) run across more books that you like, you can add them to the lists.
Give me a sec and I'll figure out how you can look them up.

April, I think it's wonderful that you're working hard to instill a lifelong love of books within your boys.

Strange. I guess I've never tried to look up my lists as someone looking for specific lists. I couldn't find an easy way of locating my particular lists. No worries. There are plenty of lists out there and I'm sure at some point or another we have duplicated titles.

The main point is....just keep reading...just keep reading....like you're already doing. (In case you didn't catch the reference....I'm quoting Dory.) :D

Ms. Carroll,
Your book sounds interesting. A cross between Alice in Wonderland and Animal Farm? I can't imagine, but congratulations on your book. It is beyond wonderful when children take to something you've created. :)

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Julie

Miss Melodie | 1 comments Hello!
I just made an account to keep track of books from work outside of my personal reading.
I'm Melodie, and I'm a newly minted children's librarian in Oklahoma. My position was created to serve our elementary-aged patrons. I've been in the role almost a year (2 total at this library), and I cannot believe that my dream job just sprouted to life at my home library.

This group particularly intrigues me because I run a book club for the 5-9 year old set, where we read the books together.

Julie Biles (juliebiles) | 1 comments My name is Julie as well! Let’s call me Julie B. I am a retired teacher. I taught Special Education but before I retired I taught elementary Reading and ELA. Reading aloud and awakening my students to a love for good literate was what I consider to be a most significant role in my job as a teacher.

Now, I am grandmother to nine and the oldest is seven. They all love to listen and are becoming good readers as well. We spend a huge part of our time together reading good books. Our family is spread out all over the country. We have done “cousin story time” on FaceTime and Zoom. Our favorites books tend to be the classics especially those written by Robert McCloskey, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Ezra Jack Keats.
