I think it has to be very personal to him. I think maybe he has lost family to the Emim (and it would seem his home, the Netherworld), or perhaps he feels responsibility for their existence in this world, and it determined to fight them because of it. It could of course be a combination of those reasons, or something completely different. It also seems that the revelation that he risks his life to fight them when he doesn't have to, and is in fact forbidden to, is a big factor in Paige's changing opinion of him.
I'm thinking there is a reason for Warden battling with the Emim that we have not seen yet. I think we still have much to find out about the real origin of the Emim and their relationship to the Reph!
I agree, Judy. The first time I read this book, there was something that don't fit at this point.
Of course it could be only an angry-painful-revengeful Warden, but in my opinion, Warden and Terebell had important and significant reasons to fight against Emim. Maybe they were trying to find a way down to their world (Emim-free). Maybe their people in the Netherworld is still alive, they are just prisioners and the others Reph don't want to risk their lives and their control in a new world where they are the kings.
I hope we will find it in The Mime Order.
