This question is aimed at anyone who likes to write, whether you write for fun or professionally.

Do you prefer to read, or would you rather write? As in, which of the do you get the most enjoyment from? I know you will say both, but do you have a preference between the two, even a slight one?

I for one prefer to read, it's just easier and more relaxing, and writing can be hard work. Not saying I don't like to write, just if I had to choose between the two I like reading better.

Curious to hear everyone else's thoughts?

I prefer to write, myself. The satisfaction I get is from the fact my muse is a bitch and won't stop until I get the whole idea out of my head. If feels so good when it stops.

Read. Definitely. My brain is scattered, all over the place. Most of the time I have a hard time putting my imagination into words. It's agonizing because, like Lily, the voices won't shut up until I write half of it down. They only bother me every once in a while, thank goodness.

Write. I have a hard time wanting to read books. I have a ton on my kindle and in a folder but can never dedicate time to read them so I'd prefer to write.

Read. I usually only write for therapeutic reasons. I distract too easily and suck at fulling putting into words what I'd like to say or what's in my head anyway. Reading is much more enjoyable. I can imagine other people's worlds and characters much more vividly and can totally immerse myself into the story. Reading is a bit like meditation for me.

Write.
Most def.
I love to read but creating my own characters and molding their destination to my liking is an amazing feeling .

I'm loving everyone's answers, It's interesting to me to see how people approach reading vs writing.

At this point right now, I should be doing a good amount of both lol.

I love to write but the answer would be read 90% of the time, mostly because I'm lazy.

You have to have read something before you can write!!! Reading gives your mind the ideas of what to say when writing and how to say it.

Reading as I can get lost in a world without having to think about it. I do love writing, but it's way more work. I've never put off reading to write, but I've certainly put off writing to read. :)

for me they go hand in hand. so both. Sometimes i'm presented with an idea from what I read that I want to try and put my own spin on it.

Personally I love to read. Writing is really great and I can express my imagination in it. But books are the reason I have the imagination. Books have also been with me since childhood, and they never get old.

Agree.

I prefer to write these days. Unlike many, I don't write to a framework I have already laid out, finding it better to let my imagination soar as I am immersed into my writing. The story reveals itself to me as I go. It doesn't work for all but it's a style that works for me.:)

H.A. I'm similar to that. I don't outline unless I fall into a massive rut for where the story is going. I prefer to just follow the story as it unfolds. Several times I've found that I've laid groundwork for the next book without even realizing it. :)

I like to call it my 'Free Range' style - cue chicken feed jokes. :)

That said, similarly, if I am feeling a bit of a block, I'll also plan my way through it.

I do like both but I think I enjoy a read a bit more. But, we write everyday even it if is simply emails or comments on a GR post!
