Right now I'm reading Red, White, and Royal Blue. I'm so glad it's living up to the hype! I have The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Summer of Jordi Perez lined up next. : )

Danada | 20 comments I’m reading Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics by Bliss Carman.

from wikipedia: Carman's method "apparently, has been to imagine each lost lyric [of Sappho] as discovered, and then to translate it; for the indefinable flavor of the translation is maintained throughout, though accompanied by the fluidity and freedom of purely original work."

it seems more to be inspired be Sappho and her poetry than a translation.

Sappho is sort of a symbol for love and desire between women, and many of these poems reflect that.

SB*needs low angst books* | 1 comments I just finished The Mystery Woman audiobook from the library but it wasn't really one I enjoyed. I think I may go and do a reread of a good fav.

I've wanted to read Sappho for a while, but I got a weird ass translation that was choppy and hard to follow . . .might be because it was in a used bookstore and is so super old I can't even find it on the internet. So maybe that was why?
I looked for Sappho in my library and they don't even have ONE COPY at all. Which I might encourage them to change because. . .you know . . .why?
Oh! And welcome to the group! :D

Another possibility for the choppiness that you expericenced is that most of what we have left of her work are fragments. She was supposed to have been very prolific - writing about 10,000 lines of poetry, of which only about 650 lines still exist (have been found/preserved?), and of that just one!! poem – the "Ode to Aphrodite" – is complete, and more than half of the original lines survive in around ten more fragments. Many of the surviving fragments of Sappho contain only a single word!!!

I didn't realize we had so little left until I just did a bit of research. It helps put what I was reading about Bliss Carman's Sappho poems make more sense. He probably incorporated all the existing poetry by Sappho and then imagined what the poems might be like based on what we do have and what we know about her and her poetry.

I just started reading Gay Like Me by Richie Jackson. It's not very thick, so I hope to finish it quickly. :)

Shay Vande (goodreadscomshaylogic) | 3 comments "Trans Mission: My Quest to a Beard" by Alex Bertie. I'm obsessed with trans guy memoirs right now since that's what I'm currently questioning about myself. I also recommend "Sorted" by YouTuber, Jackson Bird, and Thomas Page McBee's 2 books.

I only have trans women books on my TBR, so I'm going to check these out. Trans men seem to get lost in the shuffle when it comes to books. That's MHO. : )

Tatiana I'm reading The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

I'm loving every minute of it and am being blown away by the movie/book differences. Despite having seen the film, so far the book still feels completely fresh!

Renn (inquisitiveowl) | 10 comments I’m reading Tell Me How You Really Feel. It’s a fun YA romance. I’m not usually a romance person, but I love this book for the two main characters.

Eva B. I'm around 75% through The Lady's Guide To Petticoats And Piracy, and I'm loving it so far!

I agree, and I'm glad you're adding them! Jackson Bird has a goodreads account, as well, and he has some great bookshelfs for trans folks, especially trans men.

Movies and books differ a lot I've noticed. I guess it's different media, but IMHO the books are usually better. : )
