Card 6 Tasks

message 2: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2117 comments Question about task 6: Sport: Nay - The book is positioned 0-40 on your Goodreads TBR shelf.

Do you mean the position when I sort the TBR shelf according to the date added?

At the top of your shelf, there are columns:
# Cover Title Author.....

Click on # to sort by position.

Camilla | 2117 comments Janice wrote: "At the top of your shelf, there are columns:

I'm afraid that's not possible, since my TBR shelf is so large, over 9,400 books, thus it's not sortable by position. If you look at my shelf, you'll see that the # is not sortable:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

So I assume in this case it's okay to sort by date added?

message 5: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3033 comments Hey Camilla, I just played with it, and date added will put them in the order you are looking for :)

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 01, 2019 09:48AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments You can make it sortable by clicking on "Edit Bookshelves" and clicking the sortable option.

message 7: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2117 comments Jenn wrote: "Hey Camilla, I just played with it, and date added will put them in the order you are looking for :)"

No, it doesn't. When I sort by date added, I get the # order of 250, 252, 253, 8, 254, 255, 256, 257, 258, 20, 259, 246, 247 etc.

message 8: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2117 comments Janice wrote: "You can make it sortable by clicking on "Edit Bookshelves" and clicking the sortable option."

I can't, because of the shelf size. When I go to edit the shelves, I'm not able to click "sortable" on my TBR (or read) shelf, there are too many books on them. I always see the text "Reordering is currently disabled for large shelves. We apologize for the inconvenience!" when I go to my larger shelves. This problem has been going on for several years, apparently GR is in no hurry to fix it.

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments Yikes! I'll make an exception in your case, Camilla. Use your "own but not yet read" shelf.

For card 6, 2. Nay Task - The book has the same title as one of Pierce Brosnan's movies. Pierce's Filmography.

One of the films is The Heist. Does "The" also have to be in the title of the book we pick?

For Example: Heist or Heist or Heist" are not prefaced with the word "the".

I am thinking of the sometime rule to ignore "the, a and an".

It will be fine to ignore the articles. While I've been very strict in past challenges about the title being exact to that of the movie, it can be a bit more relaxed this time around - within reason.

Grainne Coughlan | 1368 comments There's many Irish authors. Here's 2 relatively new and witty writers.

A Keeper Graham Norton

Ross O'Carroll-Kelly

Really enjoyed the audio version of A Keeper because he reads those Irish place names for you.

Yes, it will work.

That cover intrigues me. And then I read the book blurb. Instant add!

Is Kate Reading the narrator of your edition, Margo? She's a big no for me when choosing an audiobook.

Ya those place names can be tricky. I lived with my mom in Ireland for awhile and our town was Dun Laoghaire - pronounced dun leery - I never would have figured that one out on my own!

Yes she is. I normally can't stand her voice but she didn’t sound toi bad in the sample of this one - or maybe it's so long since I listened to her narration that I've grown more tolerant! I was also sucked in by the blurb.

Haha, we love our unpronounceable names! I've heard good things about The Keeper Grainne.

I listened to her first in Boneshaker and she lifted the end of every sentence like it was a question. Thankfully she was co-narrator of that one, but it was still penance. I listened to the sample for The Paths Between Worlds and she wasn't making every sentence into a question, but there was a lilt and emphasis on phrases that I found irritating. Then I realized that she narrates much the same way as Scott Brick. I don't care for his narration either. Some people love both of them, but we all have different tastes.

If I read The Paths Between Worlds, it will be in print.

message 22: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice, I agree with you about both of them, but weirdly I have found some books that they did a really decent job of. I hated my first introduction with Scott and vowed never to listen to him again. Next thing I knew, I started listening to a story and did not bother to see who the narrator was until more than halfway through, and I was shocked. Kate did not have a falling out with me until the third or fourth book but I made it through. I read the Cherie Priest books (three-so far) in print. I own the fourth and have it on my TT list.

Ugh, I started a new audiobook today and the guy narrating is awful!

message 23: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11674 comments Janice, you've pinpointed what grates on my ear with Kate -that rise in tone at the end of every sentence! I kind of got used to it when I suffered through The Stormlight Archives with herself and Michael Kramer. I really enjoyed Michaels reading of that so I was happy to see him narrating another book I wanted to listen to. By the end of that book I had decided I didn't like his narration any more either! Maybe I was suffering from anxiety that Kate going to chime in at any moment LOL

At least you guys have the option of print. Pity me - if I really want to read a book I'm stuck with whoever is chosen to read it ;-p

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments There have been books where I really enjoyed Scott Brick, but the last few listens have turned me off.

I do feel for you Margo. A narrator can spoil the enjoyment of a book.

message 25: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments I just bought The Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken on audible because I am about to finish my 3rd book for card 6. For those who are struggling with the 6 Nay task (Peanut, Butter, Pretzel or Fudge in title), I will let you know what I think of it. I'm in the middle of a Tibet book for now, but will be done by tomorrow and ready to start in on the Butter one.

message 26: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yum! I love buttered chicken.

Great title, Beth. I have a “planned” book, but I can always be persuaded to throw one over for another, better sounding one. 😁

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I suddenly started doubting my interpretation of this question (language thing, probably):

History: Nay
Nay Task - The author's first or last name is Martin or Luther, or has the initials M.L.

Do initials have to be of the author's first/middle names, or can it also be first name and last name (for example Miriam Lancewood)?

I was going for the first and last names having those initials. So Miriam Lancewood would be perfect.

Lori Z | 2091 comments I have a question about task #2 for Entertainment Nay Task - The book has the same title as one of Pierce Brosnan's movies. Pierce Brosnan Filmography. I read Murder 101 for his movie Murder 101, however, I just saw the it was a tv movie, so I'm hoping it still counts. I thought I remembered another challenge where it had to be film movie and not on television. I couldn't find that mentioned in this one, so fingers crossed.

message 37: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments 3. History:
Nay Task - The author's first or last name is Martin or Luther, or has the initials M.L.

Would books by M.L. Bullock work for this task?

message 38: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments I read in a query above about Task 6. Sports - NAY
The task mentioned in that query states that it is:
- The book is positioned 0-40 on your Goodreads TBR shelf.

I found that task for Task 6. Sports as
Nay Task - Title contains the word Peanut, Butter, Pretzel, or Fudge
I completed that task accordingly and posted it. I checked again under the tasks mentioned in Msg. 1 above and find it is the same task I completed.

Have I made any mistake about this task and if so, do I have to read a book for the task:
Book is positioned 0-40 on your Goodreads TBR shelf.

Could you please clarify the correct task for 6. Sports - NAY?

Thanks.

No, I was thinking of first name/last name. If the author's name was listed as M.L. Larson, that would work.

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments For Geography Yay - There is an Alligator or Crocodile on the cover.

Was planning to read:
Talking with the Dead (Kat Parker #2) by K.L. Phelps

So, I'm fairly certain the cover is fine, my question is about the book itself. It seems to be an ebook only publication, there is no paper edition on Goodreads, nor Amazon. Amazon has the book listed as 359 pages, Goodreads has it listed at 388. Will this be acceptable to use?

I don't worry so much when the Kindle edition is over 300 pages. It's when it's around the 200 page mark that I get concerned because 25 pages doesn't leave much wiggle room. I'll accept this one.
