I'm in!

53/55

Library An Unquiet History by Matthew Battles (12/9/19)

Abroad - Seeing the primacy of the classic endangered both at home and abroad, Temple thrust himself into the debate, bringing it definitively to England's shores. (p 127)
Accommodation - But even in those states most amply furnished with libraries, public accommodation of blacks was nearly nonexistent. (p 261)
Beach + Flight - Swift in his vast humor prefigured the anxiety that Matthew Arnold would express in his 1885 poem "Dover Beach," in which we are stranded "as on a darkling plain / Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight / Where ignorant armies clash by night." (p 165)
Customs - Will they send it to the GT class, which includes works on "customs and manners including eating and drinking"? (p 296)
Departure - It marks a strict departure from the Greek model, with its prototype at Alexandria, which had no reading rooms as such. (p 69)
Escape - Much of what comes down to us from antiquity survived because it was held in small private libraries tucked away in obscure backwaters of the ancient world, where it was more likely to escape the notice of zealots as well as princes. (p 46)
Explore - Like one of the Borge's lost librarians, I explore the library's interwined relations of fancy and authenticity, of folly and epiphany, of the Parnassan and the universal. (p 32)
Excursion - There, with the help of his young secretary - a distant cousin named Jonathan Swift - he devoted the full measure of his time to intellectual affairs, which were every bit as riven with debates, intrigues, and excursions as the European diplomacy of his earlier career. (p 126)
First Class (must be together) - The school he founded at Columbia, the School of Library Economy, admitted woman to its first class. (p 206)
Foreign - But the libraries always had a grander mission than any of these: they sought to compile and contain the entire corpus of Greek literature, as well as the most significant works of many foreign languages. (p 45)
Journey - It's immediately clear that this librarian has no interest in the journey. (p 218)
Map - Again, it's among the pages of the Library Bureau's Catalog that Dewey's controlling vision reveals itself: here are the tables, the map stands, the shelves, the charge desks and date stamps, the inkwells and the pens, which the turn-of-the-century librarian could depend upon to furnish the most efficient library possible. (p 203)
Resort - Even the largest libraries were still modest enough to allow librarians to keep track of all books without resort to complex cataloging techniques. (p 153)
Retreat - If we heed the warnings of librarians present at the invention of the card catalog itself, however, whe might not so hastily make our retreat. (p 23)
Ticket - Now readers would be required to know the pressmark and to include it on the filled-out ticket they presented to librarians at the deks in order to request books. (p 189)
Tourist - ("Do you think they keep the priestly vestments in these?" I heard a fellow tourist ask his wife) (p 67)
Traveler - "If an eternal traveler were to cross it in any direction, after centuries he would see that the same volumes were repeated in the same disorder (which, thus repeated, would be and order: the Order)."

The Way We Eat Now by Bee Wilson (12/14/19)

Currency - The money comes from viewers sending their favourite BJs "star balloons", a form of virtual currency that can be converted back into actual money. (p 266)
Holiday - They had just one week's holiday per year and half of them spent it - once again - on needlework or in the garden. (p 213)
Hotel - Thanks to the New York City food hub, Antonio Perez, a retired hotel worker, tasted courgettes for the first time at the age of seventy-one. (p 348)
Room Service (must be together) - It's like never-ending room service. (p 330)
Subway - Currie and her colleagues constructed several measures of fast food but found that the best benchmark definition was simply to focus on the top ten chains in the US, which in 2010 were "McDonald's", "Subway", "Burger King", "Pizza Hut", "Jack in the Box", "Kentucky Fried Chicken", "Taco Bell", "Domino's Pizza", "Wendy's", and "Little Ceasar's". (p 326)
Taxi - Our taxi wove down narrow side streets full of people, cows, stationery shops and fruit sellers before arriving at what looked more like a launderette than a restaurant. (p 190)

Why You Eat What You Eat The Science Behind Our Relationship with Food by Rachel Herz (12/18/19)

Locale - Likewise, if you are in a locale with an unusual soundscape, such as a waterfall, or if your sizzling fajita is making your mouth water, you can record these sounds and later play them back when you want to remember your exotic Caribbean dinner or augment the sensation of eating fajitas, whether you can smell them or not. (p 384)

Confessions of a Call Centre Worker by Izabelle Winter (12/20/19)

Outbound - Outbound cold calls were the ones most customers hated receiving, usually because they were busy doing something else; in the middle of dinner, putting the kids to bed, catching some sneaky z's, about to go out, rushing to get to work or just relaxing in their own house. (p 18)

Agatha Christie's Marple The Life and Times of Miss Jane Marple by Anne Hart (12/22/19)

Cruise - There was Mr Hodgson, who "went in a cruise and married a woman young enough to be his daughter." (p 22)
Fare - Paw-paw, fresh limes, and passion fruit sundaes have become her daily fare. (p 84)
Itinerary - "You're a bit old, you know, to do this sort of thing," remonstrates her cheerful young housekeeper, Cherry Baker, but Miss Marple packs her bags and sets off upon her enterprise armed with guide books, itineraries, and a list of her fellow passengers. (p 88)
Passenger - Surely there has seldom been as eventful a trip as that which follows for the participants of Tour No. 37 of the Famous Houses and Gardens of Great Britain, particularly for passenger number 19, who not only has to follow the instructions of her tour guide but also those of Mr Rafiel, periodically delivered from beyond the grave. (p 88)
Reservations - Despite Miss Marple's reservations, it is clear that that Raymond was a successful novelist and earned a comfortable living by his pen. (p 136)
Stroganoff (Russia) - "Did Beef Stroganoff last night, it's quite easy, really." (p 161)

Guarding His Fortunes by Jaylen Florian (12/23/19)

Airport - Catalina and her staff had already arrived from the airport when Sam reached the destination. (loc 1337)
Camera - Elan did not comment, but raised his eyebrows, a bit startled that Sam had discovered a plausible new solution to how the thieves may have covered the camera lenses with polyurethane foam. (loc 271)
Getaway - "It really looked like they were making a getaway. (loc 1052)
Sightseeing - "Elan wants to take me to Old Santa Fe for sightseeing." (loc 2137)
Vacation - He knew the route fairly well from trips in past years accomanying Catalina Bastian and her brother, Vicente, to one of their favorite vacation homes. (loc 1333)

A Christmas Wish (Sapphire Bay, #3) by Leeanna Morgan (12/27/19)

Luggage - "Our luggage has been offloaded from the original flight so, if we're lucky, you won't have long to wait." (loc 590)
Upgrade - "The previous owners upgraded the kitchen the year before I bought the building." (p 1779)

A Lot Like Christmas (Wishful, #11) by Kait Nolan (12/29/19)

Swimsuit - "Swimsuits optional." (p 1170)

Flotsametrics and the Floating World How One Mans Obsession with Runaway Sneakers and Rubber Ducks Revolutionized Ocean Science by Curtis Ebbesmeyer (12/31/19)

Destination - Upon landing, I happened to pass a tourist shop selling one-week excursions to "a perfect holiday destination" called Beachcomber Island. (p 90)
Souvenir - Schwartz told me that in addition to using stout bottles and indestructible seals, he "encloses two copies of my message so the finder keeps a souvenir after a copy is returned." (p 134)
Spa - I studied floatability up close, in a hotel spa. (p 145)
Fjord (New Zealand) - Thanks to him, I would become one too - and find my calling on a fjord called Hood Canal, one of the three arms of Puget Sound. (p 31)
Voyage - The number of releases began to increase in 1819, the year of the first transatlantic steamship voyage. (p 109)
Postcard - Nearly 13 percent came from one Belgian fisherman, asking finders to send postcards from their home towns. (p 114)

Tempting Levi (Cade Brothers, #1) by Jules Barnard (1/2/20)

Booking - The feedback was extremely positive, with bookings increasing by another ten percent. (p 203)

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer (1/5/20)

Hostel - Instead of sharing a cot in a filthy youth hostel, we got to stay in real hotel rooms with private bathrooms and everything. (p 45)

Welcome to the Universe An Astrophysical Tour by Neil deGrasse Tyson (1/23/20)

Round Trip (must be together) - People on Earth would see that round trip journey taking just over 5 years, with the wormhole mouth arriving back on Earth on January 10, 3005. (p 589)

Remembrance of the Daleks by Ben Aaronovitch (1/24/20)

Bed and Breakfast or B&B - "Isn't this a bed and breakfast?" (p 80)

Crow Winter by Karen McBride
Crow Winter by Karen McBride
Foreign - pg 173: "Everything is both familiar and frustratingly foreign."
Vacation - pg. 63: "The last full week of summer vacation has always meant traffic."

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (man, this was a treasure-trove of travel words!)
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Airport - pg. 192: “On reaching Kansas City at sunrise, the travelers had gone first to the airport, where in the men’s lavatory they had washed and shaved and brushed their teeth; two hours later, after a nap in the airport lounge, they returned to the city.”
Beach - pg. 39: "Not far from River Valley Farm there is a mysterious stretch of countryside known as the Sand Hills; it is like a beach without an ocean, and at night coyotes slink among the dunes, assembling in hordes to howl."
Camera - pg 120: "There was an old man with an ancient wooden box camera who hangs around the harbor in Acapulco, and when the Estrellita docked, Otto commissioned him to do six portraits of Perry posed beside his catch."
Departure - pg 43: "As usual, Willie-Jay understood; disheartened but not disenchanted, he had persisted in courting Perry's soul until the day of its possessor's parole and departure, on the eve of which he wrote Perry a farewell letter, whose last paragraph ran: 'You are a man of extreme passion, a hungry man not quite sure where his appetite lies, a deeply frustrated man striving to project his individuality against a backdrop of rigid conformity.'"
Destination - pg. 136: "Several weeks later, after again sheltering with the James family, Perry decided on a definite destination - Worcester, Massachusetts, the home town of an 'Army buddy' he thought might welcome him and help him find 'a good-paying job.'"
Escape - pg. 265: "However, he was not altogether without hope, for he too had plotted an escape."
Getaway - pg. 265: "Accordingly, he drew a map of the Square, indicating the points at which a 'getaway car' could most advantageously be stationed."
Holiday - pg 28: “If cots were brought in and the hall was used as a dormitory, Mrs. Clutter estimated, the house could accommodate 20 guests during the Thanksgiving holidays; the others would have to lodge at motels or with neighbors."
Hotel - pg. 14: "Around the corner, at his room in the hotel where he was staying, were hundreds more like it - worn maps of every state in the Union, every Canadian province, every South American country - for the young man was an incessant conceiver of voyages, not a few of which he had actually taken: to Alaska, to Hawaii and Japan, to Hong Kong."
Journey - pg. 33: Anyone who has made the coast-to-coast journey across America, whether by train or by car, has probably passed through Garden City, but it seems reasonable to assume that few travelers remember the event."
Luggage - pg. 106: “Luggage was lashed to the fenders and roped to the roof; the trunk was so stuffed it could not be shut; inside, on the back seat, two television sets stood, one atop the other.”
Map - pg. 14: "Sipping and smoking, he studied a map spread on the counter before him - a Phillips 66 map of Mexico - but it was difficult to concentrate, for he was expecting a friend, and the friend was late."
Passenger - pg. 154: "Now the car appeared, and grew until it became a blue Dodge sedan with a single passenger, a bald, skinny man."
Postcard - pg. 319: "Perry, his eyes glitteringly immense in a face now almost phosphorescently pale, studied the ceiling; and presently, after placing a picture postcard on the patient's bedside table, the rebuffed visitor departed."
Sightseeing - pg. 118: "Inez was a prostitute who had accosted Dick on the steps of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City (the visit was part of a sightseeing tour taken to please Perry.)"
Souvenir - pg 32: "Some souvenirs exist; a moderately colorful row of commercial buildings is known as the Buffalo Block, and the once splendid Windsor Hotel, with its still splendid high-ceilinged saloon and its atmosphere of spittoons and potted palms, endures amid the variety stores and supermarkets as a Main Street landmark - one comparatively unpatronized, for the Windsor's dark, huge chambers and echoing hallways, evocative as they are, cannot compete with the air-conditioned amenities offered at the trim little Hotel Warren, or with the Wheat Lands Motel's individual television sets and 'Heated Swimming Pool.'"
Taxi - pg. 276: "I was court-martialed again in Kyoto, Japan for stealing a Japanese taxi cab."
Ticket - pg 45: "He drove to Las Vegas, sold his junk-heap car, packed his collection of maps, old letters, manuscripts, and books, and bought a ticket for a Greyhound bus."
Tourist - pg. 130: "'I am also asked to write a book on artistic wood carving, and the famous Trappers Den Lode I build in Alaska once my homestead known by all tourists that travel by car to Anchorage and maybe I will.'"
Traveler - pg. 33: Anyone who has made the coast-to-coast journey across America, whether by train or by car, has probably passed through Garden City, but it seems reasonable to assume that few travelers remember the event."
Voyage - pg.

The Affairs of the Falcons by Melissa Rivero
The Affairs of the Falcóns by Melissa Rivero
Flight - pg. 159: "'That idiot paid for your flight here,' she said."
Subway - pg. 101: "The bus stop and subway entrance were just four blocks away; the only downsidewas that a single subway line served the area."

Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner
Fleishman Is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner
Abroad - pg 28: "We were twenty when we met on our junior years abroad in Israel."

Last Day by Domenica Ruta
Last Day by Domenica Ruta
Currency - pg. 211: "Good works, he believed, were just another currency in the bankupt economies of human faith, a way for man to barter his way into salvation."

Akin by Emma Donoghue
Akin by Emma Donoghue
Bon Voyage - pg 34: "'Bon voyage, anyway.'"
Customs - pg 115: "'Douanes - that means Customs,' pointing, just to take his mind off the length of time he'd been chafing in this line already."
Itinerary - pg. 121: "Not that he expected this to be pure FUN!!! even before Michael Young had been added to the itinerary, but he knew it would please Fernande to think of him finally making the crossing."

We Met in December by Rosie Curtis
We Met in December by Rosie Curtis
Resort - pg. 38: "Celebrating New Year - and New Year's Day - in a ski resort has been amazing, but my liver feels like it needs to go on a rest cure."

The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
Hostel - pg. 118: "At night in his hostel, Anil imagined what her body looked like under the salwar khameez and those tinkling bangles as she moved above him."
Outbound - pg. 320: "Anil booked himself a seat on the same outbound flight as Baldev and Trinity, and a return flight to Dallas by himself two weeks later."
Room Service - pg. 322: "'All I want to do is stay in bed and order room service.'"

The Need by Helen Phillips
The Need by Helen Phillips
Rental Car - pg. 26: "A variety of vehicles in the parking lot: a few gleaming rental cars, a dented mini-van, a gaudily painted hippie van, a pair of motorcycles, a trio of bicycles."

Deaf Sentence by David Lodge
Deaf Sentence by David Lodge
First Class - pg. 40: "Removing the hearing aid on the train is like a magical instant upgrade from Standard to First Class: the metallic rattle and grind of the wheels on the track is reduced to a faint rhythmical clickety-click and the voices of your fellow passengers are muted to a soothing murmur."

Can you find stroganoff for me? 😛

message 36: by Debra (new)

Debra Flores | 98 comments Congrats Rosa!
I'm only just going to start this but now that I know stroganoff is one of the words... maybe I should have waited for the next list. 🤔
😀

Keep the faith Denise - you'll find it.... and if not just delete it from your list and claim it was an honest mistake.

Debra, don't worry, Stroganoff was not on the current list, I'm carring it with me for quite some time now!

Tari (thann) | 974 comments Hey Jan, would hostelry be acceptable for hostel? It's the only thing I've even come close to matching for that word. The book takes place in England and refers to an Inn twice as hostelry. Thanks!

LOL...eating it doesn't count. I actually found it in a book that takes place in a midwestern state in the US. Casserole-ville!

You did good on your recent list!! I haven't read a book in 5 weeks so my search has come to a standstill.

message 50: by Denise S (new)

Denise S | 2902 comments oy vey! you must be very busy to not read a book in 5 weeks - or are you in a reading slump? Whatever it is I hope you are able to get some reading done soon!
