This is the group read for February. I read this long ago, but it did not stick with me. I know that this can be a sensitive subject, but I would hope that we can discuss this as adults and get a good discussion going about this book. Happy reading!

Sorento62 | 71 comments Interesting that you say Uncle Tom's Cabin did not stick with you, Lisa. I have a vague feeling I may have read it before, but if I did it certainly did not stick with me either! When reading it (again?), I will know whether it's the first time or not based on the extent of deja vu.

I hate it when that happens although with the amount of books that I read, it should not be surprising. I have tried to remember the story, but I can't seem to recall anything about it. However, I have started reading books and then realize about 1/3 the way through that I have read the book before! Generally, the story tends to come back at that time!

I know it's a historically very important book, but purely as a novel I found it almost unreadable. I hope others find it more enjoyable, but I won't be joining in for a re-reading of it.

☯Emily Ginder I found this book had memorable characters and many of these portraits had a profound effect on American history. I have read it twice and found it very readable. I don't think it is the kind of book that is meant to be enjoyable, but was written for the express purpose to show the evils of slavery. It is one of the few books written that has changed the course of history.

I agree with both points.

Lisa James (sthwnd) I've read it, several years ago :) I found it both memorable AND interesting. It was certainly subversive for it's time. I own a dated 1896 copy of it which I inherited from a friend when she passed in 2006. That is the book I read.

I can't believe that this book did not stick with me. The first few chapters are hard to read without feeling for the characters.
