Mark Porton Olive, Again Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well I can't believe how much I enjoyed this. There have been plenty of good reviews about this book, there's not much to add apart from...

The writing was magic, from page one it grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and dragged me along. I laughed, gasped, felt sad, happy, amazed - above all, I identified with so much. Strout is obviously a wonderful observer of people and has a great understanding of the human condition. But most importantly she can put it into wonderful prose.

Each short story involved Olive either a lot, or a little or not at all. We were introduced to new fascinating, unusual, normal characters. I will certainly re-read some of these stories.

Eleanor Oliphant was my favourite female lead for this year until Olive came along - both very different, but just as interesting. Both struggling through life.

For me 5 BIG STARS. Now onto the first of the series!

I finished The Good Girl which may have been a best of Penguin Mysteries for this year.
This was a 4.5 stars for the genre. A creeper as it begins slowly and shifts between timelines to tell the stories of characters involved in an abduction gone astray.
Those that enjoy character driven stories with slowly paced plots will appreciate this. The action is emotionally wrenching and far less physically so.
I’ve pre-ordered the next book.

This is a brooding strong man- rugged and capable, making his own brand of justice in the world. Jack Reacher? No. Introducing Tommy- Iraq veteran, returned to the High Sierras to rustle horses and feisty female hearts, not that he notices. He’s a loyal friend. He knows guns and the mountains. He can operate on coffee and Crown Royal. He regrets the loss of a mighty fine mule. Yes, I’d like to meet up with the man for his next adventure (SPOILER) because there’s right few folks left standing from the first one. Just when things were getting right pokey, bullets started to fly and bodily injuries mounted. Our man might have talked slow but he’s a fast draw and quicker witted.
