Her littermates Sootkit and Bonekit jumped happily beside her as they stepped out of the nursery for the first time, "Look! There is SunStar!" Bonekit mewled.
"And FoxFur the Deputy!" Sootkit squealed.
"Hush dear ones," their mother, GlacierFrost said from inside the nursery.....
as she was caring for Thornlily, who was expecting kits anytime now. Briarkit and Sootkit formed a clump of moss into a ball and played mossball with their brother Bonekit.
"Now kits," GlacierFrost said as she helped ThornLily out of the nursery for some fresh air. "Why don't you go and see if Budpaw or Moonpaw will teach you anything? You are going to become apprentices in one moon!""Okay," Briarkit agreed
The kits raced over to where Budpaw and Moonpaw were. Jumping up and down with excitement Bonekit asked if they would teach them how to be an apprentice.
"I can't teach you how to be an apprentice, that's what mentor's are for," Budpaw replied. "But, I can teach you SOME moves." Briarkit and Bonekit jumped up and down in excitement.
"How about the basic stalking technique?" Moonpaw offered. "Yes yes!" the three kits cried.
"Now crouch down like this-"
"Keep your tail down Briarkit and don't wiggle it Bonekit!" Budpaw said
Sootkit walks away sighing. It's not fair he thinks. Everyone pays special attention to Briarkit and Bonekit. Sootkit thinks angrily as he lays down next to the Elder's den. Just then one of the elders steps out.
"Hello, young Sootkit," said Marshpelt,a newer elder. Sootkit's head dipped politely in response, not wanting to speak."What brings you over here, little one?" The old she-cat asked.
"Well, uh" He didn't feel like he wanted to tattle on Briarkit or Bonekit and he didn't want to be whiny."Are you brothers and sisters not including you?" The elder, MoseyMoss asked. "How did you know?"
"Just because I'm old, doesn't mean I can't see," the elder checkled. "Oh," Sootkit replied. "If they ever bother you, us elders are always looking for some excitement. Come here once in a while," Marshpelt added.
Sootkit perked his tail in surprise. He padded over to the she-cat and placed his nose on her pelt. Then four cats came walking in. It was the dawn patrol they were back! With them was Thornlily's mate Blazeclaw. He saw the kit Blackbirch was holding. He saw her cast her eyes on the ground and knew something was wrong. He rushed to the nursery looking for his mate. He saw the dead body and froze. At the beckoning of Blackbirch he exited the nursery. "What happened? " He asked his voice so dry he could hardly speak. " She and all her kits died. Except for 5his one." She said gesturing to the flame colored kit she held. Blazeclaws gaze grew hard " I want nothing to do woth her." He hissed walking away towards the warriors den. Several cats tried to change his mind but he would not yield. Sootkit watched all of these events with a sad heart. He looked at Blackbirch "May I name her. " He asked quitley he knew every kit must have a name. Blackbirch looked at Sandstar for approval he nodded his head touched by the young kits actions. Blackbirch nodded but warned Sootkit ti choose wisely. Sootkit thought for a long moment "I think her name should be Spiritkit." He mewed confidently.
"Spiritpaw, Sootpaw, Briarpaw, and Bonepaw!" Weedstar's deep mew resounded in the clearing, "It's time for your warrior names!"All the 'paws squeaked in excitement.
"Bonepaw, as you are an exceptionally brave and loyal cat, you shall be known as... Boneheart!" Weedstar gazed happily at the new warrior.
"Sootpaw, as you are an exceptionally strong-willed and kind-hearted cat, you shall be known as... Sootbreeze!
"Briarpaw, as YOU are an exceptional fighter and full of courage, you shall be known as... Briarslash!
"And finally, Spiritpaw, as you are an exceptionally kind and true cat, you shall be known as... Spiritblaze! Let your spirit shine through!" Weedstar purred at the new warriors. They all purred too.

Briarkit walked out of the nursery, dazed by the beating sunlight of green-leaf.
