Is there any famous book which you've been avoiding? And if yes, then why?

I have realized a lot of famous books are false publicity. There were books that got so much hype that I thought a good book but I couldn't even give it more than one stars. I prefer books that have less publicity and more genuine reviews. These books are the page turner for me :)

I have avoided reading "Fifty Shades of Gray." It was all I heard about a year or so ago, and the waiting list at the library where I worked was pages and pages long. Everybody who returned it told me the writing was absolutely terrible. They all found it weird that they kept reading, it was so awful, but they did!

Yes, The Fault in Our Stars.
I don't like to read YA much and the movie looks kind of corny. I want to read it because my sister said it was really good and everyone's going on about how great the movie is but I'm just hesitant so I'm avoiding buying it or watching the movie until I just give up. Lol

I was avoiding Fifty Shades of Grey until I bought it today. I read the first few chapters a couple years ago and didn't really like it too much but I thought I'd try it again.

Yes! Although I will say that a good number of these, I actually did borrow from the library, and then only after looking at them, (some of them are intimidating!) did I decide against them. Some, (I will * the ones I want to try again) I DO want to read at some point, I just figure maybe I'm not in the right stage of my life to read them yet.

All of these, I admit, I have not actually tried for myself just yet, (Have you seen the sheer size of Infinite Jest?? So scary. Also, it just attracts attention in the way that only a Serious Book can.) because they all deal with themes or things that are way out of my comfort zone...depression/suicide, pedophilia (although some people argue that Humbert of "Lolita" is not a pedophile...?), killing/gore, violently inappropriate sexual acts...and then of course, something like "Les Miserables" just simply has an extremely high death count (I did see the movie), and I don't really want to read hundreds and hundreds of pages where most of the characters die by the end. I don't actually know much about Macbeth, but I'm just playing off the fact that I didn't much care for Shakepeare's "Hamlet".

But, y'know...maybe I'll feel differently in a few years!

Yes, I have avoided thr Russian authors (Tolstoy, Dostoyefski?(sp). There is just something about the tomes of these writers that says "don't get involved". I don't know if it is a question of language, character or what. I do think I am missing out on some good possibly great writing, but I still hesitate as Aisha above.

I second The Maze Runner. I'm sure I'd love it, but it kind of seems like I'm over that type of book for now.

The Maze Runner, by James Dashner. I simply hate dystopia

City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. WAY too similar to Harry Potter for my taste, just seemed like a badly written version.

Divergent by Veronica Roth. A lot of people say it's good, but it seems just like the hunger games.

Twilight. I was compelled to read it before the movie aired, but when I saw the movie I can't help but hate the heroine Bella. And I was spoiled by many people about the books many times already haha.

Jason Bourne!

A lot of popular YA novels like Twilight. And I will avoid anything written by Nicolas Sparks and James Patterson for the remainder of my life.

The first book that came to mind was 1984. The only reason is because I always find another book that is more interesting/newer and not a classic.

I should have avoided Fifty Shades of Grey, soooooo pointless. I was interested to see what all the hype is about and it is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.

50 Shades of Grey. And not just avoiding it, more like blocking it out of my reading list for eternity.

Hmmm it would be the hunger games, any book by Nicholas sparks and the fault in our stars. I just avoid them because i have a feeling I will not like them.

The Fault in our stars, doesn't sound like something I'd like and already know the story.

Maximum Ride my friends are begging me too but I've read the Maze Runner and I hated it and I feel like Maximum ride has all the qualities I hate in the Maze Runner no offense to anyone who likes it but I don't like the sound of the plot or the characters except Fang he sounds hot

Oddly, I've never read any of the Harry Potter series either. But lately I keep thinking I might.

Not not really. I usually read famous books years later or I end up not liking the book at all.

Well, there's just so many books, great books, but I've bought the book set of games of thrones, it's literally staring me down every time I walk into my room and I see it on my shelf. But I just can't seem to pick it up and read it, maybe it's the sight of the many books I have to go through... But yeah, I'll get to it one day.

The Game of Thrones series. It just doesn't seem my cup of tea, but I guess I'll have to give up eventually and read at least the first (which is, actually, on my wishlist).

There are many books that are famous that are out there and I just don't read them because 1. They are way to long. 2. They are innaproppriate and I don't like reading those types of books. 3. I', just interested in what they are about some of the examples are:

A Game of Thrones
50 Shades of Gray

I avoid new famous books on general principle at least till the hype calms down. I can't afford to buy books, so I wait till they're readily available at the public library.
